Things we love about the Proton e.MAS 7
A design that turns heads
The Proton e.MAS 7 boasts a sleek, modern design inspired by contemporary electric SUVs. The overall body shape and a few details look reminiscent of Porsche's design language. The full-width LED tail lights resemble those on the Cayenne, and the Quartz Rose exterior colour looks similar to the Macan’s Provence hue.

The front styling is equally impressive with a pointed nose, an illuminated Proton logo, and a full-width LED light strip. Adding to the EV’s futuristic appeal is a coupe-like silhouette, high-riding stance, and flush-fitting door handles.
Further giving it a sophisticated edge are best-in-class 19-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels, engineered for performance, style, and a commanding presence.

Advanced tech and features
The Proton EV is packed with several advanced technologies, offering an enhanced driving experience. Some of the notable appointments are -
- Hi-tech infotainment system: The EV comes equipped with the best-in-class 15.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It features a high-resolution 2.5K display and supports the Proton e.MAS app for enhanced convenience and user experience.

- Integrated Live Charging Map: This only-in-class feature helps EV users to locate the nearest charging stations in real time. With 85% of Malaysia’s charging network mapped in one place, it reduces range anxiety for longer journeys.
- Head-up display: Another feature exclusive to the e.MAS 7 in its segment is the windshield head-up display. It projects essential driving-related information directly onto the windshield, so the driver can stay focused on the road.
- Advanced sound system: The best-in-class Flyme Sound System comes with 16 speakers (two are installed within the headrests), offering an immersive audio experience to occupants.

- Ambient lighting system: The EV also boasts 256-colour ambient lighting, adding a touch of personalization and sophistication.
- ADAS: The Proton e.MAS 7 comes loaded with several advanced driver assistance systems, such as intelligent cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and more.
Spacious and practical cabin
Longer, wider, and taller than its key rival, Atto 3, the Proton EV offers ample legroom and headroom to all passengers. The high seating position offers a clear view of the road, making it great for city as well as highway driving.

Adding to the comfort are fully reclinable front seats that can be adjusted to a nearly horizontal position, allowing you to take a rest or a nap while on long journeys.
The well-optimised cabin also features a total of 33 storage compartments, which come quite handy to keep essentials like gadgets, water bottles, keys, and other small knick-knacks. The boot space is estimated at 461 litres, expandable up to 1,877 litres.

Balanced and comfortable ride
The EV delivers a plush and controlled ride thanks to its amazing suspension setup. The MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension can absorb road imperfections with ease and keep the EV stable. The EV remains planted and sure-footed even at higher speeds and offers a good mix of comfort and control.
Competitive pricing
Proton has positioned the e.MAS 7 as an affordable EV option. With a starting price of RM 109,800, it undercuts competitors like the BYD Atto 3, Chery Omoda E5, and Leapmotor C10, which carry higher price tags.

The e.MAS 7 can easily attract first-time EV buyers who are budget-conscious but still want a feature-rich electric SUV. The local assembly helps keep the price low in comparison to the exported Chinese EVs.

Things we think could be better in the Proton e.MAS 7
Delayed Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Integration
Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity is one of the most important inclusions in modern-day cars. While it is planned to be rolled out via over-the-air updates in stages throughout 2025, the EV does not support this advanced technology as of now.
The rollout plan is as follows -
- May/June 2025 - Wireless Apple CarPlay
- August/September 2025 - Wired Apple CarPlay
- November/December 2025 - Wireless and wired Android Auto
The delayed Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration may be a deal-breaker for those users who rely on it for calls, seamless navigation, and media streaming.

No front trunk (frunk)
While the e.MAS 7 comes with a spacious boot at the rear, it does not have any front storage area. The frunk is quite common in modern-day EVs, offering additional storage space under the hood. It can be used to keep charging cables, emergency kits, extra luggage, or other essentials, improving cargo capacity as well as practicality.
Confusing steering wheel buttons
The buttons on the EV’s steering wheel are a mystery. They do not have proper labelling, making them frustrating to use. Users may struggle to remember their functionalities, which may lead to unnecessary distractions while driving. A more intuitive steering with clear labels could improve usability and convenience.
That’s all about the Proton e.MAS 7 hits and misses. What do you think of this game-changing EV?
