The budget commuter segment often works as the cash cow for motorcycle manufacturers like Honda. Basic no frills scooters have a near constant demand. But being cash cows, they often do not get the same amount of innovation and investment as something higher up the price list. And why would you want to fix something that isn’t broken? The same applies to the Spacy, Honda’s 125 cc contender in the automatic scooter arena. First launched in 2013, the scooter only received a cosmetic upgrade in 2016. Due to this, the Spacy does lag the competition from Yamaha’s Ego Avantiz and Ego Solariz and the Modenas Karisma 125 in some crucial ways. But at the same time, it enjoys some advantages like the distinct styling and a massive price advantage with a price of just RM 5000. But does pricing alone give it a big enough leg up over the competition?
Honda Spacy Design
There are millions of scooters on the streets today. Standing out in this crowd is not easy. The Honda Spacey has a very different approach to this. The overall design remained unchanged from its 2013 model. The 2016 revamp did bring in a new aesthetic when Honda decided to give the scooter a more mature appearance. The stripes were thus replaced by solid colors. Pearl Magellanic Black, Euphoria Red Metallic and Pearl Metalloid White all give it an understated look. The 14-inch five-spoke alloy wheels are in a complimentary silver shade. The rear section carries the 3D emblem in a chrome finish that goes very well with the overall look. The same can also be said about the leather seat that gives the scooter a premium feel. But the same beige color extends from the seat to the plastic panels under it, on the footboard and even the panels behind the front apron. The excessive beige color might not appeal to everyone’s taste.
Apart from that the scooter is plain. The front end gets a handlebar cowl mounted halogen headlight. The large indicators on the front cover large sections of the front fascia and carry over the mature look very well. The rear end gets a weird but highly visible setup with a central taillight and large indicators hanging underneath it. Together with the sensible seat, compact black exhaust, and silver grab handle, the scooter looks almost too plain. The 80/90 front and 90/90 rear tubeless tires give it some added presence. But with a length of 1841 mm, width of 660 mm, and height of 1094 mm, it is not difficult to miss out on the road. The small seat somehow contains a deep storage compartment that can store a full-face helmet. There are additional storage spaces behind the front apron along with a multipurpose hanger to hang your purse. And going by everything else, this scooter should indeed appeal more to women than men or even teenagers.
Spacy Ride & Handling
With a weight of just 100 kg, the Honda Spacy uses conventional telescopic front forks and dual shock absorbers in the rear. The 1256 mm wheelbase allows it easy maneuverability. But the ground clearance of 128 mm can prove to be too low. Otherwise, the suspension is comfortable, and ergonomics are relaxed.
Honda Spacy Engine & Fuel Consumption
Powering the Honda Spacy is an OHV single cylinder carbureted engine that produces 8.65 hp at 8000 rpm and 8.27 Nm of torque at 6500 rpm. The scooter uses a CVT for transmission and comes with both an electric and a kick starter. The engine additionally uses a forced air system to cool the engine. Without fuel injection, the engine does seem outdated by comparison but is still good for a fuel economy of 41.5 kmpl. The fuel tank can store up to 5.2-litre of fuel.
Spacy Braking & Safety
The Honda Spacy comes with a disc brake for the front along with rear drum brake. Honda has also included a side-stand actuated cut-off for the engine among other safety features targeted towards careless or new riders.
Honda Spacy Verdict
The Honda Spacy is an excellent no-frills commuter for the urban rider, especially female riders. It is cheap to buy and run, easy and comfortable to ride, has lots of space and does not hurt your eyes to look at. What more can you ask for?
