Ducati Monster 797 Review 2024

As people call it, the 'baby' monster in the Ducati lineup, the Ducati Monster 797 was redesigned and launched for the Malaysian market with fully loaded Monster features and the up and down quick shifter. The redesigned version of the naked bike gets rid of the iconic trellis frame and makes way for an alloy monocoque. Moreover, the rear sub-frame is now made of composite fibreglass, cutting down the overall weight and adding rigidity. The engine itself is now a stressed member in the frame, while the swingarm attaches directly to the rear of the engine casing. Power is generated by the Testastretta 11 V-twin pumps and is higher than the previous generation Monster 821. It weighs lighter than the previous Monster, 18 kg less, to be precise. Ducati has equipped the Monster 797 with a complete suite of electronic riding aids as standard fitment, which includes launch control and cornering ABS, wheelie control, three ride modes and eight-level traction control. Other notable features include a TFT-LCD display, Bluetooth connectivity, and full LED lighting. Priced at RM 55,900 and offered in three colour schemes, the Ducati Monster 797 competes against the Yamaha MT-07, the Yamaha MT-09, the Kawasaki Z900 ABS, the Suzuki GSX-S750 and the Triumph Street Triple.

Ducati Monster 797 Design

Introduced initially as the comeback of the Monster 900, the Monster 797 has been completely redesigned for 2022. The iconic trellis frame gets a miss and is substituted with an alloy monocoque, while the rear sub-frame is now a fibreglass amalgamation, which reduces the weight and adds to the rigidity. The swingarm attaches directly to the rear of the engine casing; the engine itself is now a stressed member in the frame. New additions to the Monster 797 include a 4.3 inches TFT-LCD display which displays all the necessary information to the rider. The menu style is reminiscent of the one used on the Panigale V4. Riders can also enjoy Bluetooth connectivity on their smartphone using the optional Ducati Multimedia System module. At the front, Ducati has equipped the Monster 797 with full LED lighting, including directional LED turn signals below the 14-litre fuel tank. The 'baby' Monster is available in three paint schemes - Ducati Red and Dark Stealth with black wheels or Aviator Grey with GP Red wheels.

Monster 797 Ride & Handling

With the elimination of the iconic trellis frame and the addition of a fibreglass rear sub-frame, the Monster 797 is lighter than before and is more rigid; it adds to the excellent ride and handling quality of the bike. The narrow sides and front frame add to the compactness of the bike. The riding position is now even more comfortable due to the saddle's design characterized by a highly tapered shape in the leg passage area and a comforting foam. The suspension setup comprises a non-adjustable 43 mm diameter upside-fork with 130 mm travel at the front, while the rear has a preload-adjustable monoshock.

Ducati Monster 797 Engine & Fuel Consumption

The Ducati Monster 797 gets power from an 803cc, Testastretta 11 V-twin, Desmodue Euro 4-compliant engine that pumps out 111 hp of max power at 9,250 rpm and creates peak torque of 93 Nm at 6,500 rpm, compared to the 109 hp at 9,250 rpm and 86 Nm of torque at 7,750 rpm of the previous generation Monster 821. This power is transmitted to the wheels through a six-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch. Ducati claims that the Monster 797 consumes 5.3 litres of fuel per 100 km, which is good enough for a long journey.

Monster 797 Braking & Safety

A four-piston Brembo calliper with a 320 mm disc performs braking duties at the front and a 245 mm disc brake with a two-piston at the rear. It rides on a 120/70 ZR17 at the front and a 180/55 ZR17 at the rear. Other safety features include ABS, engine check warning, side reflectors and a pass switch.

Ducati Monster 797 Verdict

The bike is an absolute monster. Be it the aggressive styling, excellent performance or macho stance - it lives up to the expectations. With a prevailing history in the art of bike making, Ducati has always been one of the top companies when it comes to big bikes, and the Ducati Monster 797 is a perfect option to enter the world of Ducati.
