Infiniti QX80

The cabin of the 2024 Infiniti QX80 is among the biggest in its segment. It can accommodate up to eight passengers. While the cabin is practical, the car hasn’t been updated since 2011, and the QX80 is finally beginning to show its age. The driver gets a commanding view of the road, courtesy a wide windscreen and a king-size bucket seat. The cabin gets leather upholstery with diamond-pattern stitching. The door panels along with the armrest, dashboard, and sides of the centre console get well-padded surfaces. The glossy wood trim lends a more traditional but premium look. But the 2024 Infiniti QX80 lacks features like, digital instrument cluster, and a multi-paned sunroof. Hard plastics have been used in some places but that doesn’t hamper the cabin’s look and feel. The QX80 now comes with a larger and more intuitive 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment unit. It features Infiniti’s InTouch connectivity services along with standard on-board navigation. There’s a 13-speaker Bose audio system.

The 2024 Infiniti QX80 has a boxy look that conforms to the typical SUV design. The big and bulbous design makes the car stand out among rivals. In an age when SUVs look more like crossovers, Infiniti has retained the traditional exterior styling for the QX80. It’s not sleek and stylish but is more on the practical side appearance-wise. The car runs on 22-inch alloy wheels. Higher trims get 22-inch wheels but that are not available in Malaysia. The car comes with all-round LED lighting. That aside, it gets a powered moonroof, power folding heated outside mirrors, roof rails, and a powered rear lift-gate. The company, in an earlier update, ditched the QX80’s original lumpy, awkward-looking roofline in favour of a smarter and more streamlined look with just enough chrome to keep things classy.

The 2024 Infiniti QX80 is among the most spacious SUVs in its class. There’s a lot of legroom and headroom in the two front rows. Even the third row has more space than most of its rivals. Back support of the seats are great and long rides are never tiring. The heated front seats and tri-zone automatic climate control makes travelling more comfortable. The 9.2-inch ground clearance means there’s a little bit of body roll. The suspension is a bit on the stiff side.   

The 2024 Infiniti QX80 is equipped with an eight-cylinder, 5.8-litre petrol engine that produces 400PS/560Nm. The motor is mated to a seven-speed automatic. The engine is powerful and with a lot of low-end torque, the SUV instantly thrusts forward. The car steps lively off the line. Pressing the accelerator at a high speed produces a satisfying growl. The transmission is seamless and shifts are smooth. The 2024 Infiniti QX80 is predictable on the pavement and its weight can be felt while turning corners. It’s more of a road-focussed SUV and is a superb highway performer. Handling isn’t as sharp as other high-end SUVs. The steering wheel is nicely balanced and promptly obeys driver commands.  

The Nissan-owned 2024 Infiniti QX80 is packed with safety features that include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automated emergency braking, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning with haptic feedback, blind-spot warning with brake intervention, and surround-view camera. The Bridgestone Dueler tyres have superb grip and comes to a stop instantly. 

The 2024 Infiniti QX80 is a big and spacious SUV for large families. It’s more on the utilitarian side and not high on technology. The car is ageing and is slated for a full redesign for the 2025 model year.     But it still offers fantastic value for a rugged body-on-frame chassis SUV. The build quality is super-solid. The Infiniti QX80 is a car worthy of its price tag.
