Yamaha Malaysia launches 2021 Y16ZR sports moped

KUALA LUMPUR: Finally, after a lot of speculations and rumours, Yamaha Malaysia has launched its next-gen sports moped, the Y16ZR. It was one of the most anticipated motorcycle launches of the year and will surely win the hearts of many with its striking looks. Priced at RM 10,888, the Yamaha Y16ZR is a deal not to be missed. It is offered in three colour options - Raging Yellow, Phantom Grey and Arrow Blue. Also, the first 5,000 customers will get a Royal Selangor Y16ZR personalised key pouch.

Let’s now discuss each element of the 2021 Yamaha Y16ZR from design to performance in detail. Starting with the design -

The 2021 Yamaha Y16ZR looks quite similar to Vietnam limited Exciter 155 VVA, however, compared to the ongoing Y15ZR V2, it features an array of design changes.

Yamaha has given it a brand-new contemporary design and everything visible has been revised. At the front, is present a two-panel headlamp with the high beam placed at the bottom and the low beam at the top. The turn indicators and air duct placement give the moped a rugged appeal.

The rear benefits from sleek R1-style LED tail lamps which are tucked perfectly in the narrow tail section. Further, the license plate design and placement have been revised as well. The seat design is upgraded and is now more comfortable.

The all-new Y16ZR gets a new frame with a Y-shaped reinforcement collar and a 4.5 mm engine mount. It can easily fit in the 155-cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine fed by EFI. Equipped with variable valve actuation (VVA), it pumps out a maximum power of 17.7 hp at 9,500 rpm and a peak torque of 14.4 Nm at 8,000 rpm. The power is sent to the wheels via a six-speed gearbox equipped with an assist and slipper clutch that prevents rear-wheel hop and minimizes lever effort.

Assuring a smooth ride is the front telescopic fork and rear mono-shock. Braking duties, on the other hand, are taken care of by hydraulic disc brakes at both ends. ABS is not included.

On the equipment front, the all-new Y16ZR benefits from an LCD instrument cluster that displays all the important information to the driver. It comes with a speedometer, gear indicator, tachometer, VVA indicator, and more. On the right handlebar is present a kill switch and on the left a passing light. The highlight here is the 12V charging socket inside the front cowl.
