Upcoming BMW motorcycle to feature advanced facial recognition system

KUALA LUMPUR: Later this year BMW Motorrad will introduce boxer-engined bikes which will feature the iFace system. This system will unlock and start the bike with a combination of 3D facial mapping and infrared iris-cornea scanning.

How will the iFace system work?

The system via a stripe projection technique will create a 3D map of the rider’s facial features when he/she is not wearing a helmet. The depth and contours of the rider’s face will be used to create a virtual model that will be used to unlock and start the bike.

For riders wearing helmets, the iFace system will recognize the rider's eye via infrared iris scanning. The latter will work in any light conditions, as it uses polarization filters to cut through lenses and dark-colored visors.

What happens in the case of an unauthorized attempt to move or start a motorcycle?

In case of an unauthorized attempt to move or start the BMW motorcycle, the iFace system will send a notification to the rider. In short, the system acts as a Ring doorbell system alerting the owner of any suspicious activity.

While facial recognition systems have become common in recent years, their use in the context of security is a fairly new development in the field.

When will the BMW iFace system be unveiled?

Shortly, in the autumn of this year we’ll get to see the iFace system in action.
