Say hello to the 2021 BMW Motorrad R18 Classic cruiser

KUALA LUMPUR: Following the global launch of the all-new BMW R 18 power cruiser, BMW Motorrad recently unveiled the touring-friendly version of the beast, called the R18 Classic. The second member of the new series is a nostalgic touring bike that echoes the origination of the great touring cruiser models from the House of Munich.

The majority of the elements on the new BMW R 18 Classic remain unchanged from the standard R18, such as the LED lighting systems, a tear-drop shaped fuel tank, and the hardtail-esque rear section. But the additional LED headlights, a large windscreen, passenger seat, saddlebags, and a 16-inch front wheel mark the distinguishing highlights of the touring version. The pack looks somewhat similar to the Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic, going to be its main rival. 

The all-new R18 Classic will be available only in a single trim, the First Edition whose standard colour scheme features a classic black finish with white hand-painted pinstripes along with chrome details. The Bavarian cruiser also gets an R18 seat badge, and a “First Edition” chrome clasp on the side covers.

Powering the muscle touring is the same 1,802cc air-cooled boxer twin mill in the same state of tune as the standard model. It is capable of churning out a maximum power of 91 PS at 4750 rpm and a peak torque of 158 Nm from 2,000 to 4,000 rpm, enough to attain a top speed of more than 180 kmph. The gearbox uses a six-speed transmission and exposed shaft drive just like the R18. 

The centerpiece of the suspension in the new cruiser is a double-loop steel tube frame, with a 49 mm telescopic fork and a mounted central rear strut along with adjustable spring preload. The suspension travel is 4.7 inches up front and 3.5 inches at the rear.

The new BMW R18 Classic comes standard with three standard riding modes (Rain, Roll, and Rock), integral ABS, traction control, engine drag torque control (MSR), hill start control, reverse assist, and electronic cruise control. All these features can also be found on the regular R18, except the last one.

In the local market, BMW Motorrad recently launched the R18, which is priced at RM 149,500, we hope the Classic version will also find its way to the Malaysian shores soon.
