Recap 2020: Major scooter & moped launches
Yesterday, we covered the two-wheeled BIG BOYS that entered the local market in 2020. And it is now time to look at a little more affordable and daily-use two-wheeled beauties that made it to the market this past year. We assure you this list would be just as impressive as the former.
So, without any delay let's get started with our list of scooters and mopeds that made headlines in 2020 -
Vespa GTS 300 HPE Super Tech
Priced at RM 33,000, the all-new Vespa GTS 300 HPE Super Tech is powered by a 278 cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, four-valve Euro 5 compliant mill that makes a maximum power of 23.8 hp and a peak torque of 26 Nm. Compared to the previous model, the new one model gets a 300 HPE unit fed by Magneti Marelli MIUG4 EFI that offers 18% more torque thanks to the larger intakes, high-pressure injectors, and revised combustion chamber. Included in its features list is a 4.3-inch TFT-LCD display, Vespa MIA app with iOS and Android compatibility, ABS, brand’s ASR traction control, and a USB charging port.
2021 Yamaha NMax 155
Finally, the all-new NMax 155 is in Malaysia and it retails for RM 8,998. Powering this morden scooter is a 155 cc single-cylinder SOHC, VVA engine pumping out a maximum power of 14.9 hp and a peak torque of 14.4 Nm. The power is sent to the ground via a CVT gearbox with belt drive. It comes with six-element LED headlights, LED DRLs, and four LED rear strips, LCD monochrome display, smart key operation, remote seat opening, idle start-stop, and USB charging socket
2020 Modenas Elegan 250 ABS
This year Malaysian riders got an all-new quarter-litre scooter from Modenas, the 2020 Elegan 250 ABS. Though not a fully new model, the revised model comes with a significant number of updates. For instance, the 2020 Elegan 250 gets Bosh two-channel ABS on 240 mm hydraulic brake discs at both the ends. Also, it gets dual LED projector headlight, LED DRLs, a combination of LCD and analogue display. The power comes from a 250cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled mill fed by EFI making 22.1 hp and 22.4 Nm.
2021 Honda BeAT
Honda made the year 2020 special by introducing the 2021 Honda BeAT scooter that gets a retail price of RM 5,555. Powering the new BeATi is a 109.2 cc single-cylinder, air-cooled, Euro 4 compliant mill making a maximum power of 8.67 hp and a peak torque of 9.53 Nm.
2020 Vespa Primavera Sean Wotherspoon
In 2020, we got a special edition Vespa scooter, the Primavera Sean Wotherspoon. Priced at RM 24,960, it is a collaboration between Vespa and Sean Wotherspoon, an American street culture couture designer. Decked in hues of red, yellow, aquamarine, and dark green, this one has a 80s vibe. Powering it is a 150 cc air-cooled, single-cooled Vespa i-Get engine fed by EFI churning out 12.9 hp and 12.8 Nm. Sending power to its 12-inch wheels is a CVT gearbox and belt drive.
2020 Vespa Sei Giorni II
The 2020 Vespa Sei Giorni II is priced at RM 34,500 and commemorates the 1951 Sei Giorni Internazionale race in Varese, Italy. It is powered by a slightly revised version of the Vespa 300 HPE mill that gets a 12% bump in power and 18% in torque. The single-cylinder, liquid-cooled 278 cc unit makes 23.8 hp and 26 Nm of torque. On the styling side, it gets a mudguard mounted headlight, exposed handlebar, front cowl with number ‘6’, and Grey Titanio paint.
2020 GPX Racing Popz 110
This retro-style kapchai joins the brand’s GPX Racing lineup alongside the Demon 150GR, Demon 150GN, and Gentleman 200. This young-at-heart machine for young riders is powered by a 110 cc single-cylinder, air-cooled mill pumping a maximum power of 9 hp and a peak torque of 9 Nm. The power is sent to the wheels is a four-speed rotary gearbox with centrifugal clutch & chain drive.
2020 Yamaha Y15ZR GP Edition
In 2020 we also got the limited run Yamaha Y15ZR GP Edition that commemorates the company’s MotoGP Team. Priced at RM 8,868, it features a green and black Monster Energy hue that sure looks stunning. It carries a 150 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled mill producing 15.4 PS and 13.8 Nm. The power gets to the wheels via a5-speed transmission and chain final drive.
2020 Vespa Racing Sixties
Vespa Malaysia introduced a special variant of one of its scooters - the 2020 Sprint and GTS 300 HPE Racing Sixties. They take inspiration from the racers of the sixties when Vespas were campaigned on the race track. Their bright graphics and added accessories draw attention towards thren in seconds.Powering the 2020 Sprint is a 154.8 cc single-cylinder EFI i-GET engine producing 12.7 hp and 12.8 Nm of torque. The Racing Sixties GTS uses the 278 cc HPE unit putting out 22.8 hp and 26 Nm.
2020 Yamaha NVX 155
For the model year 2020, Yamaha NVX 155 gets new graphics and is priced ar RM 10,088. Carrying it is a 155 cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine making 14.8 hp and 14.4 Nm. The power is sent to the wheels through an automatic gearbox and belt final drive. The new model benefits from a 25-litre storage compartment, USB charging port, monochrome LCD display, and keyless start.
