Malaysia gets the 2024 Kymco AK 550 Premium maxi scooter

KUALA LUMPUR: Edaran Modenas Sdn Bhd, the official distributor of Kymco two-wheelers in Malaysia, has recently launched an all-new maxi scooter, called the 2024 Kymco AK 550 Premium. The new Kymco imported scooter is available in two colours - Black and Matte Brown. The price tag reads RM 65,500 (excluding road tax, insurance, and registration).

The new AK 550 Premium aims to offer an exceptional ‘Thrills of Touring’ to the riders with its distinctive mix. It is powered by a newly-designed 550-cc liquid-cooled twin-cylinder DOHC 8V engine which kicks out a maximum power of 50.9 hp at 7,500 rpm and a peak torque of 52 Nm at 6,000 rpm. The power is sent to the rear wheel via the CVT gearbox and exposed belt drive.

According to the automaker, the said engine is silky smooth and highly responsive and generates powerful acceleration and impressive top speed, which is ideal for both spirited adventure riding as well as pleasant touring. The engine’s twin-cylinder creates enthralling sounds as they flow through a well-designed exhaust.

The scooter offers two power modes for riders to enjoy every trip, regardless of the conditions. The first is the usual "Power" mode while the other is the "Rain" setting that provides a gentler power output and softer throttle response, making it ideal for wet surfaces with poor grip.

The 2024 Kymco AK 550 Premium comes equipped with all-around LED lighting and a TFT-LCD instrument cluster with separate speed and engine status displays on either side. The latter supports Bluetooth connectivity enabling navigation, music, messaging, and calls from the rider's smartphone.

Also part of the kit is an electrically adjustable windscreen, 15-inch wheels shod with 120/70 and 160/60 front and rear tyres, cruise control, Smart key system, and a practical under-seat storage compartment capable of storing one full-face helmet and one open-face helmet.

As for the suspension, the scooter features upside-down forks at the front and a horizontal mono-shock with preload adjustment at the rear. The braking setup comprises Brembo 4-piston callipers with dual 270 mm floating discs at the front and twin-piston callipers with a single 260 mm disc at the rear. It is complemented by a cornering anti-lock braking system.
