Honda soon coming up with next-gen Rider Assist Tech

KUALA LUMPUR: The recent patents filed by Honda suggest that the company is working on taking a big leap in the rider assist technology. Once the brand did it before in 2017, by introducing the autonomously self-balanced and self ride Riding Assist and Riding Assist-e concept bikes.

Honda’s recent patent suggests that the new tech has evolved to a point where it can assure a degree of control from the rider, thus even giving him a break or preventing an accident. Part of this advanced new rider assist technology is a combination of radar, camera, laser-based Light Detection & Ranging, and a series of automatic controls (like steering, brakes, and throttles).

Other interesting and advanced inclusions are -

• Sensors for speed, braking, and acceleration
• GPS and built-in communication device (a phone with cellular, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connectivity)
• A short-range system that allows the bike to communicate with other nearby vehicles
• Steering with a ‘magnetostrictive’ torque sensor setup that monitors the rider’s input while also providing help when needed

• The rider’s weight distribution and sitting position/posture is determined by the system via a rider-facing camera along with pressure sensors in the seat, footpegs, and bar grips
• The upcoming rider assist system will offer the same level of semi-autonomous abilities as seen in the current range of premium cars. For instance, the cars with the Honda Sensing suite of driver-assist features
• The upcoming tech will include features like - Adaptive Cruise Control, Auto Lane-changing, Lane-Keeping Assistance

It is to be noted that just like the Honda Sensing system in cars, the Rider Assist Technology will only step in when needed, overall the rider will have the control.

It is a long-term project, so don’t expect a Honda motorcycle with such advanced rider assist tech anytime soon.
