KUALA LUMPUR: Please don’t get too excited about the upcoming Yamaha motorcycle, as it is far from reality. Yamaha recently applied for the European patent office to register a new motorcycle name. Called the XSR-GP,  it could be a GP variant of the ongoing XSR model.

Over and above that, we have no information about the new Yamaha motorcycle that is still on paper. Also, the lack of a number in the registered name by the brand limits us from getting a hint about the displacement. However, the inclusion of the term ‘GP’ indicates a connection with the Grand Prix.

As for the term XSR, a model Yamaha is already selling globally, and it is offered multiple displacements. For instance, in the South-East Asian market, Yamaha sells the XSR-300. At the same time, the more developed countries benefit from the XSR 700 and XSR 900 models.

Thus, Yamaha will opt for either of the two ways with the upcoming XSR-GP, i.e., more power and feature inclusion or cosmetic upgrades. Whatever the result might be, we are sure that the new Yamaha XSR-GP would be a great inclusion to the XSR family.

Grand Prix over the past few months. So, there are chances the XSR GP is another such effort. If that’s the case, get ready to see an XSR in white paint, gold wheels, and Yamaha’s signature ‘speed block’ graphics in red or yellow.

The most likely XSR model to serve as the base for the XSR GP is the XSR 900 (spin-off of the MT-09). Yamaha brims the XSR 900’s GP edition with much of the up-specced MT 09 SP hardware. For instance, the new motorcycle might get the slightly shorter swingarm, Öhlins rear shock, and DLC-coated KYB fork.

The all-new Yamaha XSR-GP is expected to debut before the end of this year either at the annual EICMA show or the Intermot show in Germany.
