2022 Yamaha MT-09 Design and features

For the revamped MT-09, Yamaha ditched the twin LED units in favour of a single projector LED headlight complemented by LED daytime running light. The lighting cluster on the rear end also saw an upgrade in the form of a new Y-shaped tail light pattern, replacing the twin-row setup. Further, Yamaha designers relocated the swingarm-mounted mudguard to a more conventional under-seat unit. Overall, the muscular looks of the bike make it one of the most exciting hyper-naked to date.

In terms of tech updates, the bike gets a new 3.5-inch, full-colour TFT-LCD console that includes colour bar-graph tachometer, gear indicator, and other important info with everything controlled by buttons positioned on the handlebar. It also comes with a six-axis IMU (inertial measurement unit) offering a comprehensive pack of riding aids including traction control, slide control, ABS cornering, front-wheel lift control, and brake control.

    2022 Yamaha MT-09 chassis upgrades

The new Yamaha MT-09 underpins a completely new frame made up of die-cast aluminium material, which is 2.3 lighter than the previous frame. It is not only lighter but also stiffer, which increases stability and gives the rider better feedback, according to Yamaha.

More weight savings came from the lighter die-cast aluminium sub-frame replacing the steel unit, a lighter engine, and a lighter exhaust system. The new forged alloy wheels also helped in shedding the bike’s weight. With these lighter elements, the bike now tips the scale at 189 kg (4 kg less than the predecessor).

    2022 Yamaha MT-09 engine specification

Powering the new MT-09 is a larger displacement engine i.e. 890-cc (replacing 847-cc) three-cylinder 4-stroke, liquid-cooled, DOHC unit that churns out a maximum power output of 117.3 hp at 10,000 rpm and a peak torque of 93 Nm at 7,000 rpm. The new engine complies with Euro5 emissions and is mated to a six-speed transmission and assist and slipper clutch with chain final drive.

2022 Yamaha MT-09 suspension and braking

For better suspension performance, the bike gets a new setup comprising adjustable upside-down forks, 41 mm in diameter, and a revised adjustable monoshock. As for braking, the new MT-09 is fitted with twin radial-mount brake callipers with hydraulic 298 mm dual-disc brake in front and hydraulic 245 mm single-disc in the rear.
