2021 Yamaha MT-09 SP breaks cover; deliveries commencing from March next year

KUALA LUMPUR: After unveiling the revamped MT-09 back in October, Yamaha now adds a new SP version to the lineup. The addition of these two letters to the standard model brings on board up-spec suspension components, a cruise control system, and as well as a dedicated styling package.

The 2021 Yamaha MT-09 SP carries the same formula at the core, comprising a Euro 5 compliant 889-cc engine making 117.4 bhp at 10,000 rpm and 93 Nm of peak torque at 7,000 rpm. It is mated to a six-speed transmission and slipper clutch with chain final drive.

For suspension, the company replaces the regular model’s KYB shock with a fully adjustable Öhlins unit. At the front, it features a higher-spec, fully adjustable inverted fork, with low and high-speed compression damping circuits. It now has a diamond-like coating for decreased stiction. The rear suspension equips remote preload adjusted for easy and quick settings.

Yamaha also added a new cruise system to the MT-09 SP version, which takes effect in fourth gear and above 50 kmph. The cruise control is canceled by using the brakes or clutch, while the Resume function re-engages the system, and the bike returns to the previous set speed.

Like the standard model, the 2021 MT-09 SP also gets a hefty electronics update; the R1 M derived IMU system, which governs ABS, slide control, lean-sensitive traction control, along with multiple riding modes. All the driver-assistance systems are managed through the new 3.5-inch TFT dash.

In terms of design, the new MT-09 SP gets dedicated colours and graphics for a more aggressive, premium, and exclusive look. It includes a multi-toned black-blue paint and water transferred graphics inspired by R1-M. To match the premium finish, the new iteration also comes with a double stitched seat.

The company has yet to announce the new 2021 MT-09 SP price, however, its deliveries are slated to commence from March 2021 in Europe. In the local market, the standard MT-09 retails at RM 47,388.
