The CX-30 and CX-5 are two popular models in Mazda’s crossover line-up in Malaysia. Mazda updated both its models recently; while the CX-5 facelift came in during the third quarter of 2019, the refreshed CX-30 barged in at the beginning of 2020. These premium crossovers improve over their pre-update versions on several fronts.
Starting with the CX-5, it comes in five variants with three engine choices including a 2.0-litre petrol, 2.5-litre petrol, and a solo 2.2-litre oil burner paired to a common six-speed torque converter in 2WD and 4WD drivetrains. The comprehensive equipment list comprises a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, blind-spot monitoring and so on.
Changes to the 2020 CX-30 improve it visually over the previous version, and styling updates are visible on the inside as well. A bunch of new features have been added to the crossover, making it more comfortable for the occupants seated inside.
Coming from Mazda’s stable, CX-5 and CX-30 have a lot in common, both visually and feature-wise; however there are some bits that set them apart. If you are contemplating buying one of these and wondering which model suits you best, here is a spec-based comparison between the siblings that can help you decide which one fits the bill.
Mazda CX-30 vs. Mazda CX-5: Dimensions
In comparison, the CX-5 is 105 mm longer, 45mm wider, and 126 mm higher than the CX-30. It sits on 35 mm longer wheelbase, hinting at a relatively larger cabin. This indicates the CX-5, which slots above CX-30 in Mazda’s line-up, is a larger crossover with slightly more room for occupants. While it is bigger in size, the CX-30 is heavier by 207 kg.
Mazda CX-30 vs. Mazda CX-5: Exterior features & styling
Out of the two models, CX-5 is larger with a more aggressive road presence, however, both feature some common elements such as the front grille, coupe-like roofline, sharp creases on sides, and a low slung bonnet in front. While both models share copiously, the major point of distinction is the rear styling. In comparison, the CX-30 appears curvy. The steeply raked in windshield meets with the protruded lid, rendering an embossed look. Adding to the modish boot are the slick wrap-around tail-lamps featuring LED units. As for CX-5, the styling at the rear is in contrast to its smaller sibling, carrying a mundane boxy look. Considering the size, CX-30 seems more like an overgrown hatchback with a coupe styling, on the other hand, CX-5 is a full-size SUV.
Mazda CX-30 vs. Mazda CX-5: Interior features & styling
The interior styling is plush and upmarket, thanks to the top-notch material quality, fit and finish. Use of leather on steering wheel, seat covers and door trims further enhance the premium quotient. A plethora of comfort and connectivity features have been layered in both the models, though the talking point on the CX-30 specs sheet is the large 8.8-inch Mazda connect infotainment system with multi-function Commander control & voice command, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, etc. In comparison, the CX-5 specs sheet is more feature-rich with additional bits such as centre armrest with integrated cup holders with USB port, 12V power outlets, etc. available as part of the pack. Moreover, the CX-5 has more room for the occupants as it sits on a longer wheelbase and boasts larger proportions, carving out extra space as compared to CX-30.
Mazda CX-30 vs. Mazda CX-5: Engine & transmission
Both the crossovers come with petrol and diesel engines, available with a standard six-speed automatic gearbox. Speaking of output, the 2.5-litre turbo unit in the CX-5 line-up makes a massive 228 hp, as against CX-30’s 2.5-litre petrol unit which makes 163 hp.
Mazda CX-30 vs. Mazda CX-5: Safety
The table above shows CX-5 carries some additional features over its smaller sibling which misses out on emergency brake assist, emergency stop signal, speed sensing auto-lock, and walk away lock. Adaptive LED headlights and lane keep assist system have also been missed out.
The standard safety kit on Mazda CX-30 comprises following active and passive safety tech -
- Dual front airbags
- Side airbags
- Curtain airbags
- Driver side Knee airbag
- Anti-lock-braking system
- Electronic brakeforce distribution
- Hill launch assist
- ISOFIX child seat anchors
- Auto hold for electric parking brake
- Dynamic stability control
- Traction control system
In addition to the above features, emergency brake assist, emergency stop signal, speed sensing auto-lock, and walk away lock are standardized on the larger CX-5.
Mazda CX-30 vs. Mazda CX-5: Price
In comparison, the entry-level variant in the CX-5 line-up costs RM 6,000 (approximately) less than the base CX-30 which is priced at RM 143,059. However, the top-spec CX-5 trim is around RM 9,000 pricier than the range-topping CX-30. Both share copiously on the feature front, though CX-5 boasts some additional comfort, connectivity and safety amenities. Besides, CX-5 is larger, though CX-30 is visually more appealing.
Mazda CX-30 vs. Mazda CX-5: Conclusion
The CX-30 sits below CX-5 in Mazda’s line-up, however, both models share a lot in common on styling and feature front. While CX-5 is larger and has a bigger cabin, the CX-30 is a better-looking model. Speaking of mechanicals, both CX-30 and CX-5 come with petrol and diesel engines, though the latter is more powerful. The SKYACTIV-Drive4 six-speed automatic gearbox with manual shift mode is common in both the models. Hence, if you are looking for a compact premium crossover, CX-30 is your pick, and if you require a larger and slightly better-equipped car, go for CX-5.
