KUALA LUMPUR: In a dazzling display of anticipation and excitement, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) heralded a landmark moment yesterday, triumphantly reintroducing the Touareg after a 12-year hiatus alongside a thrilling announcement poised to captivate VW enthusiasts this year.

The launch event for the 2024 Touareg was transformed into a grand celebration by Denyu Bostandzhiev, VPCM's managing director. His enthusiasm was palpable as he took the stage, not just to talk about the Touareg but to usher in a monumental year for Volkswagen in Malaysia.

A highlight of his speech was the hint of the arrival of the new Golf models, including the facelifted 2024 Golf GTi 8.5 and the much-celebrated 50th Edition Golf, marking the iconic vehicle's golden anniversary.

This announcement was underscored by a captivating video clip showcasing the Golf's 50th-anniversary celebrations, igniting anticipation for the new arrivals.

So, what insights do we have on these models? But more crucially, here are the essential details you must know about these Golfs.

Innovations in the 2024 Volkswagen Golf GTi

Volkswagen has unveiled the latest iteration of its bestselling model, the Golf, in celebration of its 50th anniversary. The 2024 Volkswagen Golf introduces a series of enhancements and innovations, setting a new benchmark for the compact car segment. Here are the key takeaways from the latest upgrade:

• Exterior Redesign: The 2024 model features a more dynamic exterior with an illuminated Volkswagen logo, a revamped front bumper, and new LED headlights. The introduction of IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights with an advanced high-performance main beam extends visibility up to 500 meters. The rear of the vehicle boasts newly designed tail lights with IQ.LIGHT 3D LED clusters, further enhancing its aesthetic appeal.

• High-Tech Interior: The interior of the new Volkswagen Golf has undergone a significant overhaul, boasting a next-generation infotainment system integrated with ChatGPT. This system features a fast processor and intuitive operation, including an intelligent IDA voice assistant for controlling air conditioning, navigation, and other functions. The integration of ChatGPT allows for seamless interaction with artificial intelligence, enhancing the driving experience.

• Enhanced Features: Additional upgrades include a new multi-function steering wheel, an improved Park Assist Plus function, and an Area View system for a 360-degree view around the vehicle.

The interior features Edition 50 logos, stainless steel pedal caps, and a black headliner, creating a distinctive look.

• Advanced Equipment: This edition is equipped with the "Discover" infotainment system, IDA voice assistant, Keyless Access, driving profile selection, and an anti-theft alarm system. Optional enhancements include IQ. LIGHT matrix LED headlights, a head-up display, and a panoramic sunroof, adding to its appeal.

• Dynamic Performance: The lineup offers a range of drive versions, beginning with a robust 1.5-litre TSI engine that produces 150 PS, coupled with a six-speed manual transmission for an engaging driving experience. We anticipate that in Malaysia, if we get this version, they might include a powertrain borrowed from the previously offered Golf R-Line, renowned for its non-DSG transmission. This model featured the reliable 1.4 litre TSI engine, delivering an impressive 150 PS and 250 Nm of torque across a wide range from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm, seamlessly integrated with an Aisin-sourced eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission for smooth and responsive acceleration.

As Volkswagen celebrates this significant milestone, the launch of the 2024 Golf models, including the special 50th Edition, signifies a new era of innovation and excellence for the brand, especially if their locally assembled.

These models not only celebrate the storied heritage of the Golf but also anticipate the future, offering a driving experience that is unparalleled for enthusiasts globally. It was a shame that the decline in confidence among Malaysians towards Volkswagen was largely due to issues with the misunderstood reliability of its DSG transmissions, perceived shortcomings in after-sales service, concerns over high maintenance costs, and the resultant impact on resale values.

The brand faced significant challenges with its DSG gearboxes, which were prone to malfunctions in Malaysia’s hot and humid climate, leading to widespread public concern. But then again, it was one of the most advanced cars on the market back then, so was it a just a case that Malaysians weren't ready/ understand to maintain them?

Additionally, customers expressed dissatisfaction with Volkswagen’s after-sales service, citing long waits for parts, high repair costs, and a lack of transparency.

These factors collectively contributed to a perception of VW vehicles as expensive to maintain and less reliable, further affecting their resale value. Volkswagen has since undertaken measures to improve service quality, extend warranties, and adjust vehicle technology to regain consumer trust and we like it as we want more of their new models in the Malaysian showrooms.
