VW ID 4 electric SUV enters production in Germany
KUALA LUMPUR: The ID 4 is Volkswagen’s first electric SUV, and it has now entered production in Saxony, Germany - the company announced recently. The e-SUV will also be built in China and the US in the future.
Previously, the ID 4 was introduced in concept form, named ID Crozz and it is the second car in the automaker’s EV lineup to go on sale in the US, Europe, and China. The first vehicle in the said lineup was ID 3, whose sale is limited to Europe. Besides, after the ID 3 hatch, ID 4 is the next to benefit from the company’s MEB electric platform. We hope the sharing between the two (ID 3 and ID 4) is limited to this point only, as the hatch encountered several software glitches, leading to delayed deliveries. The said mishap along with several others lead to VW’s back then CEO, Herbert Dies’s removal from the brand in June.
The VW EV lineup is not just limited to the ID 3 hatch and ID 4 SUV. It also includes ID Roomzzz - a large SUV, ID Buggy - a dune buggy, and ID Buzz - a microbus. Further, Volkswagen has also promised a delivery variant of the ID Buzz. All these models are supported by the company’s modular electric vehicle platform, called the MEB.

Coming back to the VW ID 4 SUV, as per the leaked filing to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the EV measures 4,592 mm in length, 1,852 mm in width, and 1,629 mm in height. Its wheelbase of 2,765 mm makes it a spacious car. Earlier, VW’s boos Ralf Brandstatter stated that the ID 4 would feature a single electric motor and rear-wheel drive with a more robust twin-motor, 4WD layout to be offered within the first year of sales. VW claims a range of 500 km on a single charge, along with a top speed of 180 kmph. Also, the VW e-SUV comes with fast-charging that allows the battery pack to get 80 percent charged in 30 minutes.
More details about the Volkswagen ID 4 will be revealed in the coming months, so stay tuned with Zigwheels for the latest updates.
