VW ID.3 scores 5-star rating at Euro NCAP safety test

KUALA LUMPUR: Good news for the customers of VW ID.3, as the MEB-based electric-car has scored a five-star rating in the crash test conducted by Euro NCAP.

Here are the full details of the VW ID.3 EURO NCAP safety test scores -

• Children protection level: 44 out of 49 points; i.e., 89%
• Driver & passengers protection level: 33.3 out of 38 points; i.e., 87% Vulnerable road users protection level: 38.8 out of 54.8 points; i.e., 71%
• Safety Assists level: 14.2 out of 16 points; 88%

Overall, VW ID.3 appears to be a safe and reliable commuter. It is equipped with a standard multi-collision braking system that immediately applies brake after a collision or impact, thus preventing the vehicle from getting involved in another incident. Further, in the event of an accident, the e-Call system in the electric car automatically sends the emergency services a message stating the car's location.

In the case of child protection, the ID.3 scored maximum points in the frontal offset test and side barrier impact. The front passenger airbag can be disabled in ID.3 to allow a rearward-facing child restraint. The system provides the driver with clear information regarding the status of the airbag.

In the test, the ID.3 bonnet provided good protection to pedestrians' legs and pelvis area. For the pedestrian's head, the result was adequate. The autonomous emergency braking system comes as standard fitment and can detect pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles.

Further, the car comes with a driver monitoring system, lane support system, and speed assistance system.

After safety, let's now discuss ID.3's under the hood configurations. It is available in three battery sizes - 45 kWh, 58 kWh, and 77 kWh, and offers a range of 330 km, 420 km, and 550 km, respectively. A rear-mounted electric motor provides the drive, making 204 PS of maximum power and 310 Nm of torque. The EV takes 3.4 seconds to go from 0 to 60 kmph and displays a top speed of 160 kmph.
