Volkswagen to become an all-electric car brand in Europe by 2033

KUALA LUMPUR: All big or small automakers are geared up to embrace full electrification sooner or later, and Volkswagen Group is no exception. The German auto giant has recently shed some light on its electrified mobility plans laid in June 2021.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Is Volkswagen going all electric?

Yes, Volkswagen will phase out the internal combustion engine from its Europe line-up by 2033.
  • What are the upcoming Volkswagen electric cars?

Volkswagen will introduce 10 new EVs by 2026, including an entry-level electric car priced less than €25,000 (RM 117,676) to the ID Buzz and the Volkswagen ID Aero.

Thomas Schafer, the new CEO of the VW Group, confirmed that the brand will completely phase out ICE-powered cars in Europe and will only offer electric cars from 2033. It will introduce 10 new EVs in the Old Continent by 2026, including a simplified portfolio ranging from an entry-level electric car priced less than €25,000 (approximately equal to RM 117,676), the ID Buzz and the Volkswagen ID Aero (the brand’s first electric sedan). The brand aims to have the right offer in every segment in order to have a suitable model range.

As for other global touchpoints, the company is expected to roll out a similar treatment after hitting the set goal for the European markets.

Schaefer further confirmed that in the coming years the group would reduce the number of models on offer and raise the profit margin for all volume brands like Volkswagen, Skoda and SEAT, and commercial vehicles - to 8% by 2025.

To turn its EV plans into reality, the VW Group has also made partnerships with other firms, just like other carmakers, which will save a whopping  €220 million (RM 1,035 million) in terms of production costs.

    Volkswagen ID.4

Closer to home, Volkswagen Passengers Cars Malaysia recently previewed the ID.4 electric SUV that will rival the likes of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. The German EV is equipped with an electric motor producing a maximum power output of 204 PS and a 77 kWh lithium-ion battery offering a range of 519 km (on the WLTP cycle). Pricing and availability details of the EV are yet to be announced.
