Volkswagen Taigo is on its way to Europe
KUALA LUMPUR: Just like other auto-giants, Volkswagen is also in full swing of adding more and more SUV/crossovers to its global lineup. On one side, the Wolfsburg-based automaker is working hard on expanding its ID range with the SUVs like ID.5 and ID,6; on the other, it recently teased a new crossover that will be exclusive to the European market.
The company has also announced that the upcoming crossover model will go by the name ‘Taigo’ in the Old Continent and also confirmed that it will be added to the brand’s range of SUVs in the small vehicle segment. Based on South America’s Nivus crossover, the production of the Taigo will be done at the Pamplona factory in Spain where the automaker already manufactures Polo and T-Cross, both of which share a number of components with the Nivus.
So what all changes it carries over the Nivus? The Taigo has a more upscale front fascia, thanks to more sophisticated headlights and the assumed LED strip visible in the teaser images. The strip connects the lighting clusters of the SUV while giving it a unique look. The teaser also shows off the hexagonal pattern of the radiator grille, which also differs from the flatter design available on the Nivus’s front grill. Also different is the SUV’s front bumper.
“The wait is finally over for those who have been looking for a crossover utility vehicle that combines an elevated seating position with a sporty coupe silhouette”, Volkswagen says.
About the SUV’s specifications, the automaker commented, “The new Taigo will be launched on the market with economical TSI engines, LED headlights as standard, a modern operating concept, a fully digital cockpit, and a multitude of assist systems.”
According to the statement, we can expect a 114 HP turbocharged 1.0-litre TSI three-cylinder under the hood; the unit powering the Nivus. On the driver-assistance aids, VW may bring on board the autonomous emergency braking, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, reversing camera, adaptive cruise control, and fatigue detector.
Volkswagen has confirmed that the new Taigo will make its global début this summer, which will be then followed by the launch in the Old Continent towards the end of 2021.
