Volkswagen premiers all-new SUV Coupe Concept at 2019 Auto Shanghai
KUALA LUMPUR: The ongoing Auto Shanghai is proving to be the showroom for concept vehicles. Popular marques like Geely, Honda, Lotus, and Mercedes-Benz are flaunting their concept cars to pull the visitor’s attention. And there is no reason for the German auto-giant Volkswagen to show any timidity in the race, thanks to the all-new SUV Coupe Concept that is being premiered at the company’s stand.
The concept car is not the only SUV that the company is showcasing at its stage. Volkswagen has already parked a number of SUVs in the auto show in a bid to vaunt its dire interest in the SUV segment. However, SUV Coupe Concept represents FAW-Volkswagen’s first-ever coupe-styled SUV, and its introduction alongside other SUVs reflects the company’s plan to populate its SUV range.
“By 2020, we will double our SUV family from six to at least 12 SUV model series. In each of our joint ventures (FAW Volkswagen and SAIC Volkswagen) we will offer a complete palette of SUV models for every taste, from compact to extra roomy, highly stylish to highly functional, from powerful design to premium equipment,” said Stephan Wollenstein (Volkswagen China CEO).
This ambitious plan will surely be tested in the intense competition among the automakers in the Chinese market. But as for now, Volkswagen has somehow managed to engendered interest among the stakeholders. The new SUV Coupe accoutres “avantgarde design, sporty proportions and outstanding performance” and is built on the well-known MQB platform. This gives a fair suggestion that four-wheeler may equip the same powerhouse like other SUVs in the range.
Keeping speculations aside, we can say that the concept vehicle looks bold, sporty, and overall alluring. It features a large grille at the front that also houses the LED headlights under its contours. The other part of the grille contains a long chrome lining in the shape of a ‘moustache’ running all along towards the boundary of the foglamps. The wheel wells are quite spacious, and the fenders are bold. This is followed by a set of LED taillights with X-shaped graphics.
The company forecasts that the share of SUV in China will double up to 40% by 2020 and for its part, it will launch a total of eight SUVs by the end of this year.
