Volkswagen Mk8 Golf GTI coming soon to Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Folks get ready for a brand new powerful and hot hatch - the VW Mk8 Golf GTI. The said German maker was spotted a few times locally, hinting towards its soon arrival. However, after seeing VW Malaysia's recent Instagram story our doubt got confirmed. The VW IG story showed a red sketch of the Mk8 Golf GTI with a pole reading "What Happens Next? - Fight or Flight". And of course, we think it'll be a fight and that too a tough one.
While all the Golf variants available locally are fully-imported CBU since arrival, the case might be different for the Mk8 Golf GTI. Only time will tell what's on cards for this particular Golf.
Jurgen Stackmann, Volkswagon's Board Member of Management responsible for Sales, said, “For over four decades, the three letters GTI have stood for sporty driving pleasure and technology at the highest level.” He further added that “We thank our customers for 2.3 million Golf GTIs sold. The new GTI is full of innovation. It too will set new standards and thrill our customers.”
What to expect?
Compared to the regular Golf, the Mk8 GTI trim is expected to put up a rugged and aggressive face. However, like the Golf GTI, it will be a classy car with real and sizable twin-rounded exhaust pipes, one on each side. Also, the images reveal the rear with a central 'GTI' moniker instead of 'Golf' as seen in the regular models. The hatch's sportier look is further enchanted by the optional X-shaped fog lamps that without a doubt are the most defining feature along with the extended roof spoiler and rear bumper.
As for the cabin, the Mk8 Golf GTI features the signature tartan upholstery. The cockpit is very well loaded with the standard Discover Media infotainment system and digital gauges. Also, one offer is an optional 10-inch Discover Pro system. On the safety front is present Car2X communication tech, Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring, and more.
Powering the Ford Focus ST and Renault Megane RS competitor is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine making 242 hp of power and a peak torque of 370 Nm. The powerplant is coupled with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, directing power to the front axle.
The VW Mk8 Golf GTI can cover 0 to 100 kmph run in 6+ seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 250 kmph.
