Volkswagen ID.6 unveiled at the 2021 Auto Shanghai
KUALA LUMPUR: After ID.3 and ID.4, the third member of the Volkswagen ID family called ID.6 has finally made its first official appearance at the ongoing Auto Shanghai Show in China. Previewed in two versions - the ID.6 Crozz and the ID.6 X, the electric SUV is based on the Volkswagen AG’s modular electric car platform MEB, just like the previous two models.
Design-wise, the two ID.6 versions have different front fascias such as the X (pictured in purple) has a more conventional look, while the Crozz (pictured in Orange) gets a more off-road focused front with a different bumper and aluminum front scuff plates. In addition, headlight and tail light designs are also slightly different.
Said to be the elder brother of the ID.4, the length of the SUV has been stretched to 4,876 mm to accommodate the third row. It is almost 300 mm more than the ID.4. The wheelbase has also increased to 2,965 mm.
Inside, the SUV shares much of the elements with other members of the family. Some of the highlights are:
- No physical buttons and switches
- 12-inch infotainment unit with “Hello ID.” voice control
- A narrow strip light below the windscreen, called ID. Light
- An augmented reality head-up display
- IQ.Drive assistance systems, including Travel Assist
Both versions of the Volkswagen ID.6 will be on offer in four different powertrains, using either a 58- or 77-kWh battery pack and a choice of AWD or RWD. Depending on motor and battery size, the range varies between 436 and 588 km on the Chinese NEDC test cycle. The 4MOTION version produces a maximum output of 305 PS, enabling the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 6.6 seconds and attain a top speed of 160 kmph.
Volkswagen will build the ID.6 at two different locations in China and will sell it exclusively in the country with a choice between six or seven seats.
“With the new ID.6, we are laying the foundations for at least 50 percent of our cars sold in China being electric by 2030,” said Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of the Volkswagen brand.
