Volkswagen ID.5 spied ahead of premiere later this year

KUALA LUMPUR: After Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4, the German automaker is gearing up to add a third model to its ID electric vehicle lineup. Last month, the company officially announced that the pilot production of the upcoming coupe has started in Zwickau, Germany. Spy photographers have recently snapped the prototype version of the Volkswagen EV undergoing final testing that gives us a great look at it. 

Said to be the coupe version of the ID.4, the upcoming model features the same front-end styling and similar tail lights and detailing at the rear. However, the upcoming crossover has a different roofline with a sleeker silhouette, a swept-back boot lid, and a sail-shaped C-pillar treatment. A unique rear spoiler further enhances the visual appeal of the electric ID.5. Both vehicles underpin Volkswagen Group's MEB modular EV platform.

Unfortunately, spy photographers did not get any interior pictures of the SUV, which is expected to borrow trims and features from the ID.4. Thus, a 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10- or 12-inch infotainment system are likely to be on the Volkswagen ID.5 specs sheet.

The crossover’s mechanical setup could also be the same as the ID.4, which comes with an 82 kWh battery pack and a single electric motor at the rear axle, delivering 201 horsepower. A 30-minute charging with a 120 kW DC charger provides the SUV a range of 320 km, while the 11 kW charger delivers a 53 km range in an hour. The WLTP-verified cruising range is up to 520 kilometres, while the century sprint is 8.5 seconds. 

Volkswagen will globally unveil the ID.5 in the second half of this year for the European market. Besides this, the company’s ID electric lineup will be getting a large ID.6 SUV based on ID Roomzz, a dune buggy based on ID Buggy, and an updated version of its legend microbus ID Buzz, all based on MEB modular EV architecture.
