Volkswagen ID.5 EV teased; performance GTX variant confirmed
KUALA LUMPUR: As we know Volkswagen has geared up to launch its ID badged electric vehicles one by one. We have already seen the ID.3, ID.4, and ID.6, and it's the time for the ID.5. The German automaker teased the upcoming EV during the world premiere of the ID.4 GTX through some computer-generated images that give us an idea how the new electric SUV looks like.
The teaser also confirmed that the ID.5 will also be offered in the GTX version. The company’s CEO Ralf Brandstatter said, "Our next coupe is all about the elegance of flowing lines, and naturally the ID 5 will also have a GTX version."
Said to be the coupe version of the ID.4, the upcoming SUV will underpin the brand’s MEB platform dedicated to electric vehicles. As far as the design is concerned, the ID.5 features the same front-end styling and detailing as the ID.4; the major difference is the roof arch as the upcoming one is a coupe SUV. Apart from that, a swept-back tailgate and a sail-shaped C-pillar treatment can also be observed in the upcoming EV.
About the ID.5 interior design, Volkswagen has not dropped any clue, however, the market expects a cabin with many similarities to the ID.4. Features like a 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10- or 12-inch infotainment system, and ambient lighting are expected to be seen on the ID.5 specs sheet.
Not only design, but the two models are also likely to share the powertrains. In that case, the ID.5 would have a 77-kWh battery pack with 320 miles driving range and a rear-mounted motor generating a maximum power of 201 hp and a peak torque of 309 Nm. However, we could also see a smaller 58-kWh battery with around 250 miles of range. The performance ID.5 GTX might get a double electric motor making 295 hp and 460 Nm with an all-wheel-drive setup.
Volkswagen is likely to reveal the ID.5 and ID.5 GTX in the second half of this year for the European market.
