Check out the new design sketches of Volkswagen ID.4
KUALA LUMPUR: Till today, Volkswagen has only revealed a few concept drawings of what the new ID.4 electric SUV might look like. But as the SUV's global debut is now round the corner, the automaker released the sketches of the production-spec ID.4 giving a good idea of its urban and stylish exterior.
ID.4 is the second member of the Volkswagen all-electric ID family, which is built on the same MEB platform as ID.3. A close comparison of the models reveals the fact that the VW designers took the curvy styling of the smaller sibling and stretched it over the elder one. The outline of the SUV is of a typical crossover and the face looks very flush. In place of the grille, the sketch features a very sleek chunk that is flanked by stretched out LED projector headlights.
VW Group's chief designer, Klaus Zyciora, the man behind the SUV's design, explains its character as clean, flowing, and powerful. He said, "It appears strong and self-confident in a new way. This is mainly due to the seamless, aerodynamic style of our ID. family, which we have transferred to the SUV segment for the first time with the ID.4. This means that gentle, soft transitions alternate with sharp, clear separating edges. The design looks as if shaped by the wind itself."
VW has not yet revealed the ID.4's technical details, but the SUV will equip two electric motors if we go by the brand's MEB architecture. The first motor powering the rear wheels is expected to produce 201 hp and 310 Nm of torque while with the other one driving the front wheels, the combined output is likely to be around 302 hp and 450 Nm.
The speculated driving range of ID.4 is 310 miles (500 kilometers); however, this number is based on Europe's forgiving WLTP test.
Earlier this week, the automaker started serial production of the SUV at the Zwickau car plant in Germany. To take on the likes of Tesla Model Y, the SUV is slated to launch in Europe and China first.
