Volkswagen enhances its best-selling 1.5 TSI powertrain for better mileage & efficiency
KUALA LUMPUR: Seems like the internal combustion engine will not disappear from the face of the automobile industry so soon. One strong ray of hope comes from Volkswagen which recently enhanced its best-selling petrol engine, the 1.5 TSI.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Which cars will be the first to benefit from new VW 1.5 TSI evo2 mill?
The VW T-Roc and T-Roc Cabriolet will be the first models to benefit from the new engine that will offer both reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The German automaker has released details of the latest “evo2” iteration of its EA211 1.5 TSI four-cylinder turbo petrol unit. The said unit will initially be made available with an output of 150 PS with further variants to follow.
The VW T-Roc and T-Roc Cabriolet will be the first models to benefit from the new engine that will offer both reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Thomas Ulbrich, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen brand, responsible for “Technical Development” said, “The 1.5 TSI is a key pillar of the Volkswagen engine range because it powers many models worldwide, from the T-Cross through to the Passat Variant,"
He further added, "We have continuously enhanced the compact four-cylinder unit. It now offers significant fuel consumption benefits and a very dynamic response.”
“The highlights of the latest version include Active Cylinder Management ACTplus, an emission control module close to the engine and the modern TSI-Evo combustion process.”
Key features of the new VW 1.5 TSI evo2 are -
- The three-way catalytic converter and petrol particulate filter is moved close to the engine in a single emission control module. Thus improving the efficiency of the emission control system
The use of precious metals in production is reduced, thus contributing to sustainability and creating the basis for compliance with future emission standards - Inclusions like an enhanced Active Cylinder Management system reduce fuel consumption by improving activation & deactivation of the two cylinders
- Also part of the kit is ACTplus, a Wolfsburg & Salzgitter joint development, wherein the 2nd & 3rd cylinders are not fired when the mill is operating at low and medium speeds & loads
- The enhanced mill also includes - a variable-geometry turbocharger, a high-pressure injection system (generating up to 350 bar pressure), a piston with cast-in cooling dust plasma-coated cylinder walls to reduce friction
- The new powertrain is future-ready as it can operate on fuels containing ingredients made from renewable energy sources
- The mill is also suitable for various hybridisation levels
Overall, Volkswagen seems to cover all the domains. For instance, it plans to achieve a sales share of 70 percent with EVs alongside enhancing the important combustion engines.
