Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) enforcement postponed until further notice

KUALA LUMPUR: The transport ministry of Malaysia has announced through an official statement that the implementation of Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) will be postponed until further notice. Previously, the government had scheduled the enforcement of VEP on October 1 at Malaysia-Singapore southern border.

A number of issues are responsible for this deferment. The statement issued by the transport ministry reads, “In light of several issues made known to the ministry including the difficulties to get appointments for RFID Tag installation, the ministry will defer enforcement of VEP on all outbound traffic at both KSAB and BSI during peak hour traffic operation until further notice.” To be specific, the words refer to the two checkpoints in Johor, Sultan Abu Bakar Complex, and Sultan Iskandar Building.

VEP is a compulsory requirement of every foreign vehicle ingressing the Malaysian precincts. The registration for the same was opened this year in April. The foreign vehicle owners were given a spell of 6 months to apply and get the RFID tag. Moreover, the law also states that the VEP is valid only for five years.

The government is also highlighting the importance of VEP, which is necessary to address the issues of foreign vehicle owners and the ones among them who have violed the country’s traffic rules. It will also help the authorities to check the export/import of stolen and cloned vehicles across the Malaysia-Singapore borders. The illegal and unlawfully registered vehicles, which are brought into Malaysia from Singapore with fake number plates and are sold at lower prices have been one of the major frets for the transport ministry.

The transport ministry also expects from the foreign vehicle owners that they will take the opportunity of postponing the enforcement of VEP and opening of fitment centre to get their vehicle registered and install the RFID Tag. This will help them in avoiding any unnecessary harassment while crossing the Malaysian borders.
