US-spec 2023 Honda HR-V breaks cover; here’s what makes it different from the global model
Honda HR-V needs no introduction as this SUV single-handedly created the B-SUV segment in the local market in 2015. And since then, it has continued to woo enthusiasts with its styling and tech. However, now all eyes are set on the all-new third-generation HR-V launch in Malaysia as it is already on sale in other ASEAN countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore. But wait, the SUV you see above is also the new Honda HR-V, which is not the one we are waiting for. So, what exactly is that?
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What makes the new US-spec Honda HR-V different?
The new US-spec Honda HR-V is larger than the third-generation HR-V version available in the global markets. The exterior and interior styling of the two models also vary. What powers the new US-spec Honda HR-V?
Honda US has not yet disclosed the HR-V engine specs yet, but it confirmed the new SUV would benefit from a more responsive engine. This latest model is the US-spec 2023 Honda HR-V that does not connect with the third-generation HR-V version available in the global markets. Unlike the latter, it falls in the C-segment category and shares underpinnings with the new Honda Civic.
Here are the differences between the two HR-V versions:
Dimensions
Compared to the global model, the US-spec HR-V is larger with a longer wheelbase and wider stance. The size is right with the space and utility for adventurous trips, yet nimble to manoeuvre city streets, says Honda. However, the exact dimensions are not revealed by the automaker. The global HR-V measures 4330 mm in length, 1730 mm in width, 1590 mm in height, and carries a wheelbase of 2610 mm.
Design
Not only dimensions but the design of the US-spec HR-V is also different from what we will be getting in some time. On the front, we can see an entirely new and large octagonal grille flanked by slim LED headlights. The lower fascia gets a wide mesh pattern in the centre and vertical air vents at the corners. Also, the bonnet is longer than the previous model. The Honda designers also changed the location of the rear door handles as they are now positioned at the side of the body. On the rear, the smaller and sleeker tail lights are teamed up with a steeper tailgate.
Contrary to that, the international version (pictured below) boasts a body-coloured radiator grille with horizontal slats, which is edged by slim trapezoidal headlights. The LED daytime running lights are linked with a chrome strip at the front that echoes with a full-width rear light bar.
Engine
While Honda US did not disclose the HR-V engine specs yet, it confirmed the new SUV would benefit from a more responsive engine and a new independent rear suspension that will offer a more confident, refined, and fun-to-drive experience to the enthusiasts.
Speaking about the engine options available with the global HR-V, the first is a VTEC Turbo engine that delivers a maximum power output of 177 PS and a peak torque of 240 Nm. Next on the list is a naturally-aspirated four-cylinder VTEC mill good for producing 121 PS and 145 Nm torque.
The SUV available in Thailand comes equipped with i-MMD (intelligent Multi-Mode Drive) technology, combining a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated engine and an e-motor for a total output of 215 PS.
Interior
Just like the engine, the Japanese automaker is keeping the interior details under the covers as of now. However, one thing is sure the US-spec model will have a cabin different from the HR-V for the rest of the world. The latter comes packed with a freestanding 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 7.0-inch instrument display, multi-function steering wheel, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, 10-speaker sound system, auto air conditioning system, three drive modes (Eco, Normal, and Sport) and a large panoramic glass roof.
As for safety, the Honda Sensing ADAS suite is available with advanced systems like autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, blind-spot monitoring, and a multi-view camera system.
So, that's all for now; we will be getting more information on the all-new US-spec HR-V over the coming months, so stay tuned.
