Upcoming Mitsubishi all-electric SUV leaked before launch
KUALA LUMPUR: It was only in April that Mitsubishi confirmed the comeback of the Airtek nameplate in the form of an all-electric version. However, the EV is scheduled for a 2021 China launch before its official debut its images and preliminary details have leaked online.
Though the car in images wears a heavy camouflage, we get a reasonably good idea of its overall appearance. For instance, the 2022 Airtrek EV features the brand’s signature Dynamic Shield front face that includes a dual-tier lighting setup - L-shaped headlamp with DRL sitting above it.
The previous teasers reveal a chrome bar joining the DRLs with the grille featuring rugged slates. The lower apron features a trapezoidal-shaped intake and sensors which is part of the EVs active safety kit.
The vehicle's side profile suggests a ‘floating roof’ look, thanks to the rising shouler line that ends in a C-pillar design. At the rear, the Airtrek EV features T-shaped taillights that extend towards the rear fender and give the car a distinctive look.
Nothing about the interior is known, however seeing the car’s modern look we expect the cabin to follow suit. We know that the new Airtrek is jointly developed by Mitsubishi and Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) and the reports suggest that it is based on the latter’s Aion V example.
In China, GAC Aion V measures 4,586 mm in length, 1,920 mm in length, and 1,728 mm in height. Its wheelbase stretches to 2,830 mm. Compared to the latest Outlander, the Aion V has a much smaller footprint, however, it does surpass the former in the wheelbase department, i.e. 2,830 mm vs. 2,706 mm.
Details about Airtrek’s electric powertrain are nil at the moment, however, we can take hints from the Aion V that is powered by a front-mounted electric motor making 184 PS and 350 Nm of torque. It offers a range between 500 to 680 km, depending on the model.
The 2022 Mitsubishi Airtrek EV SUV is expected to be revealed soon, so stay tuned with ZigWheels Malaysia to catch up with the advancements.
