Upcoming Mazda CX-50 could be the successor of CX-5

KUALA LUMPUR: The ongoing Mazda CX-5 has been on sale since 2017, but we know the Japanese automaker is planning a future replacement for its high selling crossover. Last year, it filed a patent with CX-50 moniker, and now a new report from Spyder7 suggests that it could be the successor of CX-5, which is likely to roll out in a couple of years.

The statement is in light of the fact that CX-30 was introduced as a stylish alternative to the CX-3 slotted between the CX-3 and CX-5. However, it is just speculation at the moment. 

The publication states that the Mazda CX-50 will have a more stylish coupe-style design with a lower roofline, redesigned LED headlights, and a sharper front fascia evolved from Mazda's Kodo "Soul of Motion" design language.

According to the report, CX-50 will be based on the brand's new RWD platform, which will also underpin the upcoming Mazda6 sedan. According to this, the crossover would support a range of new inline-six and hybrid powertrain options. The buyers of top variants could get the option to choose between 3.0- or 3.3-litre inline-six units. Other engines on offer would be two smaller 2.5-litre powertrains, out of which one will be hybrid. 

As a mid-size SUV, the upcoming CX-50 would compete against the RWD and AWD versions of Ford Explorer.

Spyder7 also says the Mazda CX-50 is likely to debut in 2021 or early 2022. By the time the current-generation CX-5 will have been on sale for five years; thus, it would be the right time for its replacement. But, whether CX-50 will replace the CX-5 or be sold alongside it, is still not clear as of now. For further updates on this, stay tuned to Zigwheels Malaysia.
