UMW Toyota registers 9% month-on-month sales growth in May 2022

KUALA LUMPUR: After recovering from the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, car sales in Malaysia are showing positive trends month on month. And UMW Toyota's latest sales numbers are a testament to that. Malaysia's top non-national car brand sold a total of 7,579 cars in May 2022 (including Lexus units), which is 9.1% higher than the April numbers. Here's a quick breakdown of the Japanese automaker's recent sales figures -

• Toyota cars sold in May 2022 - 7,442 
• Lexus cars sold in May 2022 - 137 
• Year-to-date sales - 36,972 units (Toyota + Lexus); 9% higher than YTD sales of May 2021

With that said, the company expects a sales increase in the coming months with the new product launches. While there is no official info on the names of upcoming Toyota cars, it is speculated to be the new Veloz (Avanza replacement) and GR86.

As for monthly promotions, the automaker continues with a RM 4,000 promo on purchasing the Vios and Yaris. This month, it also offers mid-year savings, cash rebates, and sales tax savings to Toyota fans.

Well, although the pandemic has almost ended, the automotive industry is now struggling with another issue, and that's the shortage of semiconductors. As a result, the carmakers are not able to meet their demand levels. In light of this global concern, it is forecasted that vehicle sales in Malaysia will be slow for the rest of 2022.

Furthermore, the soon-to-be-ended sales and services tax (SST) rebate might impact the numbers. However, some buyers may want to take advantage of the ongoing exemption and contribute to ramping up the June sales, predicts UMW Toyota.
