UMW Toyota records impressive growth in May 2023

KUALA LUMPUR: UMW Toyota ended May on an impressive note as it managed to sell a total of 8,004 vehicles (Toyota + Lexus) during the month, representing a growth of 18% over the previous month. With that, the year-to-date sales for May 2023 of the non-national automaker in Malaysia come down to 39,990 units, which is 8% higher than the May 2022 YTD sales of 36,972 units.

Alongside the remarkable sales figures, the month of May also witnessed the following noteworthy activities contributing to the brand’s carbon neutrality goal and solidifying its position in the market -

Toyota bZ4x road testing begins

UMW Toyota brought in sample units of the highly anticipated Toyota bZ4X EV in May to undertake market research and technical evaluations on local roads. This move is in line with the automaker’s multi-pathway strategy that seeks to attain carbon neutrality by providing a variety of choices, such as BEVs, FCEVs, and HEVs

According to UMW Toyota Motor President, Datuk Ravindran K., “Toyota has a multipathway strategy towards carbon neutrality and this is evident through these green powertrains, each developed to best meet the unique needs of customers in different parts of the world. For Malaysia, we believe HEVs are the most suitable for Malaysians, considering the fuel source of our electricity generation and the availability of charging infrastructure outside city centres in the West coast of Peninsular Malaysia. We will add more HEV models in 2023.” 

First eco-friendly Lexus centre opens up 

Another milestone achieved in May was the grand opening of the first-ever eco-friendly Lexus centre in Malaysia, which is operated by PCM Klang Motor. The new showroom is designed with green building tech and is outfitted with energy-efficient LED lighting and furniture made from repurposed oil drums. It showcases Lexus' dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. 

Lexus RX launched

The highly-awaited Lexus RX also hit the local shores last month. Based on the advanced GA-K version of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), the new RX is 90 kg lighter than the model it replaces and promises improved performance and fuel efficiency. It retails for RM 468,888 (on the road without insurance).
