UMW Toyota Motors sold 96,000 units in 2015
Kuala Lumpur: 2015 has proved to be a great year for the Japanese automaker Toyota. According to reports, UMW Toyota Motors has challenged the uncertain market environment of 2015 by selling a total of 95,861 vehicles. This comprised 93,760 vehicles of the Toyota brand in Malaysia whereas 2,101 vehicles of the Lexus brand. Although in terms of year to date revenue, it was lower than its last year.
The past year was a complete roller coaster ride for the Malaysian Automotive industry. The market faced a lot of ups and downs in the vehicle sales statistics. Various factors were responsible, majorly being the GST implementation and Weakening Ringgit that made a gloomy cost environment in the country. These market uncertainties made the entire automobile industry crippled and ultimately affected the sales figures. However, the scenario is completely different in the case of Toyota that challenged this environment and sold over 96000 units.
The major player from the garage of Toyota past year was the widely loved family sedan Toyota Vios. The company sold close to 34,000 units of this city sedan which was widely followed by another luxury sedan Corolla Altis with a sales figure of 8000 units. The pick-up trucks in Malaysia has become a very popular culture in the recent time and this was proved by the Toyota Hilux which became the most popular pickup truck with a sale number of around 24000 units.
Toyota also introduced its maiden locally assembled Hybrid model Camry, that marked its strong presence and the environment awareness among Malaysians, as the car recorded a sale of over 5,000 units since it was launched in last April.
The luxury division of Toyota branded as Lexus marked its equal presence in the luxury car market of the country in 2015. Lexus delivered a total of 2,101 units comprising of its all-new compact SUV Lexus NX that accounted a total sale of 1,100 units, more than the half of total. Besides which, the ES sedan and all-new Lexus RX launched in November, were also found to be productive among the luxury car lovers in Malaysia.
Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor said, “This past year has been an exciting year for UMW Toyota Motor, amidst the soft market environment. We rolled out new models and carried out sales and marketing initiatives which excited the market. Additionally, the new introduction of our first locally-assembled hybrid vehicle – the Camry Hybrid – also sparked excitement to our customers.”
With a great sales number in 2015, UMW Toyota is all optimistic to hit its sales target in 2016 as well.
