Toyota to provide shuttles to hospitals treating Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases
KUALA LUMPUR: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the world to a standstill. Many countries are under lockdown, and people are advised to stay at their homes. However, healthcare workers and doctors still need to report to duty and treat patients affected by the virus.
Extending a helping hand in such a time of crisis, Toyota Mobility Foundation has announced that it’ll be providing ten shuttles - connected and sanitized, free of cost to the hospitals treating COVID-19 patients. Thailand will be the first country to receive these Toyota shuttles. Commuters will be able to book these shuttles in advance as they are equipped with software designed for the purpose. Called the ‘Just-in-Time’ software, it is developed by a Singapore based SWAT Mobility company that deals in demand-responsive ride-sharing solutions. It’s like any other ride-hailing app, but only for frontliners and healthcare workers. The passengers won’t have to wait in groups at a set location; rather, they will be picked from various spots across the city. In addition, the app will also tell the exact pick-up and drop time to the passengers.
Toyota Mobility Foundation, Asia Region Program Director, Pras Ganesh said, “The aim of TMF is to provide the best possible mobility solution which allows the healthcare workers to have a safe, convenient and free commute which also allows peace of mind at this uncertain time.” He further added, “Based upon the Bangkok experience, we also aim to roll this service out in some Southeast Asian countries. Once standardized, the operating procedure will also be made available to anyone who would like to provide similar services,”
According to TMF, all shuttles will be sanitised regularly and come equipped with air purification devices and seat covers that’ll change time-to-time. Passengers will be required to follow social distancing guidelines in the shuttles.
After Thailand, TMF plans to introduce the said shuttle service in other Southeast Asian countries as well, and hopefully in Malaysia too. The service will start in mid-April and continue for at least three months.
