Toyota reveals GR Supra Super GT Concept at Tokyo Auto Salon
KUALA LUMPUR: Toyota has announced at the Tokyo Auto Salon (TAS) that it's yet-to-be-launched Supra will compete at the Super GT Racing Series in Japan. It has also been revealed that the new addition will be coming under the GT500 class and will be the replacement for the current Lexus LC racer. As there has been enough news of Toyota Supra, the confirmed entrant of Toyota for the Detroit Show this year, the company has revealed the GR Supra Super GT concept at the ongoing TAS.
Talking about the GT500 series, it is set to converge with Germany’s Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) series in 2020 as both the series targets to achieve Class 1 regulations, needing a downsized four-cylinder 2-litre turbocharged engine. Thus, it is quite expected that the Super Supra model will get the powertrain as per the GT500 formula. However, no other mechanical details have been revealed.
Additionally, the front panel of the car gets a large front splitter, a huge air inlet along with sizeable canards under the Supra’s F1-inspirited nose. The canards reside beneath the headlights, which are quite similar to the production model. The variant is also equipped with aerodynamic mirrors, front fender vents and centre-locking wheels shod in Bridgestone Potenza rubber.
At the rear, the Super Supra gets a diffuser and enormous tea tray wings along with convincing fenders, which help to complete the race-ready look. In terms of the design, the car will be installed with a double bubble roof, lightweight windows, a roll cage and HANS-compatible racing seats.
No official news has been received yet on the drivers’ lineup, but it will be no matter of surprise if Nick Cassidy, the New-Zealand based driver and co-driver Ryō Hirakawa, take the seat.
