Toyota GR86 to be discontinued by 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: It was only last month that the second-gen Toyota GR86 was launched in Japan and now it is being previewed at the Kenshiki European Forum.

The Europe-spec GR86 is the same as the Japan-spec model, however, Toyota Motor Europe will offer the car for just two years, i.e., 2025. Why? Well, the automaker has not given a reason yet, but it could be related to combustion engines and the associated emissions. However, it is a known fact that the EU will be banning ICE in 2035, which is 10 years from GR86 discontinuation.

According to Autocar UK, non-compliance to the new Euro NCAP regulations (new technical and non-technical test protocols) might be one of the reasons for GR86's two years of short life span.

TME’s vice-president, Tom Fux, told Autocar UK, “We felt that the vehicle is so good and so needed for Toyota’s image in Europe, and we have a small but very passionate group of customers out there who are searching for vehicles like the GR86.”

He further added, “In the end, we decided it’s important to offer this vehicle, and then we will need to stop the vehicle because it will not meet the new requirements in the future.” The Euro-spec Toyota GR6 is offered in two transmission options - a six-speed manual and a six-speed conventional automatic. While the GR86 equipped with a manual option will complete the century sprint in 6.3 seconds, the automatic option takes 0.6 seconds longer.

As for the Toyota GR86 Malaysia arrival, we think UMW Toyota Motor might introduce it soon especially after the success of GR Yaris and GR Supra.
