Toyota Fortuner vs. Volkswagen Tiguan : Solving the dilemma
Coming close to sedans in terms of comfort and features, nowadays, SUVs offer almost all new tidbits that buyers hunt. Almost all the world car giants have their hands in the segment, with demand for these never really dissipating. In this article, we will be taking an in-depth look at two popular models Toyota Fortuner and Volkswagen Tiguan.
While both these cars are popular names in the Malaysian market, it is Toyota Fortuner that is undoubtedly the one that’s been around for longer - first going on sale in 2005. The mid-size SUV is built on the Hilux pickup platform and features two/three rows of seats. With a couple of tweaks gained in 2018, the ongoing iteration comes in three different variants - 2.4 AT 4X4, 2.4 VRZ AT 4X4, and 2.7 SRZ AT 4X4 at a starting price of RM 162,178.
On the contrary, VW Tiguan lies among the best-selling SUVs in the world. The five-seater SUV touched the Malaysian shores in 2017, which has many hi-tech updates to pull SUV buyers away from its Japanese rival. Volkswagen Tiguan price also starts at RM 162,108.
To see how these SUVs fare against each other, read on our Toyota Fortuner vs. Volkswagen Tiguan comparison.
Toyota Fortuner vs. Volkswagen Tiguan: Dimensions
If we compare the two models in terms of dimensions, Fortuner evidently outclasses the Tiguan. With larger sizes, the Fortuner easily offers much more interior space.
Toyota Fortuner vs. Volkswagen Tiguan: Exterior
At this front, the two models are poles apart. From every angle, Fortuner looks like a full-fledged mid-sized SUV, whereas Tiguan poses a more crossover-ish look.
Toyota Fortuner throws a bold impression front look with the combination of smooth curves and masculinity in the sculpted hood and the chrome embossed reverse-trapezoidal radiator grille. With a sporty side profile, the SUV looks intimidating for sure. Volkswagen Tiguan features a typical VW front look with a wide grille, the side and rear are not flashy but subtle and portrays crisp lines. However, the exterior appointments of both models are almost identical.
Toyota Fortuner vs. Volkswagen Tiguan: Interior
Toyota Fortuner’s cabin has an upright dashboard and central console design that ease out the operation of controls. Though certain aspects of the centre stack don’t look trendy. As for fit & finish, it scores quite well as the most touch-points are adequately padded and well put-together. The cabin is spacious, with the front and middle row feeling comfortable. However, the third-row is decidedly tight and not actually meant for adults.
Sitting in Tiguan feels modern and timeless thanks to the ‘Vienna’ combination leather seat upholstery and ‘Dark Grid’ Interior trim. The overall look blends seamlessly without any part looking out of place. The steering wheel is leather-wrapped and looks similar to the VW Polo. The 5-seater Tiguan enjoys the benefit of a larger boot capacity of 615 litres against Fortuner’s 200 litres (with three rows in place).
Volkswagen Tiguan has an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system for the starting model, while base Fortuner does not come with a touchscreen display. A closer look at the above comparison clearly indicates that Tiguan is better equipped in hi-tech goodies.
Toyota Fortuner vs. Volkswagen Tiguan: Engine and performance
With a smaller engine under the bonnet, the German counterpart produces the same horsepower but kicks out the less torque. In the case of fuel economy, Volkswagen claims a mileage of 14.9 kmpl thanks to its smaller engine and lower weight, whereas the Fortuner hauls around 12-13 kmpl.
Coming to the ride and handling, the Tiguan is a bit on the stiffer side. Despite this, the ride and handling are good enough as the SUV does not feel unsettled on bad roads, making it ideal for daily city use. While the Fortuner steering feels a bit heavier, also the ride quality is not very supple, but it has excellent all-round visibility. However, when it comes to off-roading, the Fortuner comes out with flying colours. It is effortless on any terrain, be it a hill, mud, loose soil, anything.
Toyota Fortuner vs. Volkswagen Tiguan: Safety
Both these SUVs are almost similar when it comes to the safety bits, and neither would really disappoint or concern a buyer much. However, the Fortuner specs sheet comprises seven airbags and all the essentials that one can expect from an SUV. At the same time, Tiguan boasts some hi-tech appointments like a cruise control system with speed limiter and multi-collision brake system.
Verdict
Well, it’s hard to pick a clear winner here. The two models are evenly matched in aspects like power and pricing; the Fortuner is undoubtedly a bigger car with more seats. While Tiguan is technologically more modern and also, its smaller size is actually a boon in urban environments. Those who want a premium SUV for city use and long-distance road trips, Tiguan completes all the requirements. But, the ones looking for a sturdy off-roader can pick Fortuner blindly.
