Toyota Aygo X Prologue concept revealed, launch expected in 2022
KUALA LUMPUR: As the global automotive industry moves towards SUVs and crossovers, the small hatchback segment seems to be on its last legs. Although Toyota does not look like giving the segment soon, and the reason is here in front of us, the Toyota Aygo X Prologue Concept that gives us an early glimpse of the next-generation Aygo. The Japanese automaker has been selling the hatchback in the European market since 2005.
The prototype previews the bold yet cutesy styling appeal of the small car in a funkier fashion. “Fun and playfulness have always been at the heart of Aygo. Now, we’ve added to its DNA an additional pinch of hot spice,” says Lance Scott, Toyota’s European Design Director.
The interesting highlights on the front fascia are claw-like LED headlamps connected by an unbroken strip, with a quite large grille. Down the sides, there is a swooping two-tone paint scheme and bulky wheel arches giving the Aygo X Prologue an SUV-like stance. Also, you can notice the ‘Aygo X’ lettering on the tyres. At the back, the concept model sports Tall ribbon-like brake lights and also an unbroken light bar just like the front. A bicycle holder is also mounted at the bottom.
Other distinctive styling elements are flush-mounted door handles and action cameras on the side mirror for “capturing and sharing special moments of exploration.”
Dimensionally, the prototype is longer and taller than the ongoing Toyota Aygo with precise measurements of 3700 mm in length and 1500 mm in height.
What about the Toyota Aygo interior, unfortunately, Toyota has not revealed any image of the concept's interior, as of now. The guesses move around a pretty simple but practical cabin with a large touch screen placed on the dash. The hatchback will have a 90 mm longer wheelbase enabling Toyota to offer a roomier cabin.
Also, there are no details on the Toyota Aygo X Prologue powertrain options, but we can expect a number of power and drivetrain layouts as the upcoming Aygo will be based on the same TNGA-B platform that underpins the all-new Yaris. A naturally-aspirated three-cylinder mill and a hybrid variant could be on the automaker’s cards, owing to Europe’s strict emissions regulations.
The third-generation Toyota Aygo is likely to make a debut next year. Pricing in the Old Continent could start at around 15,000 euros (approximately RM 73,730).
