Spy Images reveal possible PHEV variant of the smart #5

KUALA LUMPUR: Since its global debut, the smart #5 has mainly attracted EV enthusiasts because as we know smart in the modern day, they are an electric vehicle manufacturer.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the smart #5?

It's smart's latest release featuring a more boxier shape
  • When will the smart#5 come to Malaysia?

It is touted to be introduced in Malaysia this year
  • However, recent spy shots brings good news for the ICE fraternity, because photos suggest that a hybrid variant could be in the works.

The leaked photos, as suggested by Autocar, depict a version of the smart #5 that appears to incorporate a regular engine, hinting at the introduction of a hybrid powertrain.

According to Autohome's article who orginally broke the news, this possible smart #5 hybrid variant is expected to feature a 1.5-litre turbocharged plug in hybrid system developed by Geely Group, the parent company of Smart.

While official specifications remain to be seen, there’s suggestions that the vehicle might employ a plug in hybrid setup similar to Geely’s existing plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) configurations.

Despite the mechanical changes, the hybrid model retains the same exterior styling as the smart #5 EV. The SUV continues to sport its capsule-shaped body design, complemented by a full-width LED light bar that seamlessly connects the headlights.

However, subtle differences can be seen to set the hybrid variant apart from its fully electric counterpart.

One notable change is the wheel design. Unlike the EV variant, which features aerodynamic wheels, the hybrid prototype is seen with a set of five-spoke alloy wheels—similar to those previously used on the smart #1.

Another significant tell tale sign is the presence of two additional openings on the rear fenders, one on each side. While their exact function remains unconfirmed, it is highly likely that one of these openings is a fuel filler port, further fueling the assumption that this model is indeed a hybrid and not just another electric prototype.

Inside, the hybrid version of the smart #5 closely mirrors its electric sibling. The cabin continues to feature a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel and a connected dual-screen setup that merges the central infotainment display with a passenger-side screen.

This design aligns with smart’s focus on creating a tech-forward, but user-friendly cockpit.

Another carryover element is the brown door panel trim, which adds a premium touch to the interior ambiance. Overall, these similarities suggest that Smart aims to maintain a uniform cabin experience even it were to produce different powertrain variants.

A key indicator of this is the placement of the intercooler for the turbocharger, which is positioned to the right of the engine—different from Geely’s conventional PHEV layouts, where it is typically mounted at the front.

    smart#5 side profile

This deviation has led to speculation that the hybrid Smart #5 might feature a specially adapted powertrain, possibly even a non-turbocharged hybrid system designed for efficiency over outright performance.

At this stage, it remains unclear whether the PHEV smart #5 is a finalised production model or merely a test mule. Automakers often develop test vehicles using existing body shells to evaluate new powertrain configurations, and this could be the case here.

However, Autohome mentioned that smart has confirmed that it will be developing ICE electrified powertrains after the photo leaks. Zeekr, another Geely based brand is also apparently working on hybrid powertrains after the softer sales of electric vehicles.

With an increasing number of automakers exploring hybrid options to complement their EV lineups, it wouldn’t be surprising if Smart eventually introduces a hybrid-powered Smart #5 to appeal to a broader range of consumers.
