Spiritual successor to Lotus Espirit likely to make an entry in 2021
KUALA LUMPUR: More than ten years have passed since Lotus shocked the auto industry at the 2010 Paris Motor Show by taking the wraps off the most amazingly designed five concept cars.
Lotus is just putting the final touch on the much talked about Evija electric hypercar. The new model is expected to be a supercar in the same line as the Espirit, with only difference to be noted in their nameplates. Reportedly, the new successor car will bridge the gap between Evora and Evija, contributed by the new hybrid powertrain utilizing a V-6 as its internal combustion engine.
Lotus will then launch a final model with an attractive aluminum platform, digging the current lineage further. The company also plans to switch to battery-electric powertrain options, at a later stage.
If anyone of you could recall the 2010 concept car by Lotus was conceived to be fitted with a 5.0-liter V8 engine which combined with Lotus supercharger could ignite 550 horsepower. If sources are to believe, the Espirit successor will take the same road but will a smaller version of the powertrain option, preferably a 3.5-liter V6 with a pinch of added expertise from Volvo makers.
The Chinese auto giant has joined hands with Lotus and is fully committed to re-build its brand image. Geely also has plans to refresh the current lineage by taking its brand racing. We can be sure that future Lotus cars will also spot engines sourced by Geely.
If reports are to believe, we can assume the Lotus Espirit successor supercar can power a whopping 500 HP. We can still speculate on the nature of the engine it is going to sport, whether it would be a naturally aspirated combustion engine or an induction one. Nonetheless, we assume the new supercar to be placed above the Evora, if not replace it.
On the designing and styling features, the successor supercar will have a two-seater cabin. Along with this, the car may have a drive centric package to abide by all the norms in North America and China to enhance its global appeal.
The new Lotus sports car is apparently due for its unwrapping in 2021 and sales are anticipated to begin at the later part of the year. We still can only assume if the successor supercar is built on the Espirit platform, but it will surely be one of its kind models.
