smart #5 up for grabs in China; Will it come to Malaysia?

KUALA LUMPUR: Globally revealed in August this year, the smart #5 electric SUV has now been launched in the Chinese market. Said to be the brand’s largest model to date, the #5 is positioned between the #3 and #1.

Let’s know the smart #5 in detail, starting with the price.

The smart #5 is offered in four variants in China - Long Range Adventure Standard Edition, Long Range Adventure Deluxe Edition, Ultra-long Range Deluxe Edition, and Jungle Realm Limited Edition. The price begins at CNY 239,900 (approx RM147k) and goes up to CNY 368,000 (approx RM 225k).

Built on smart’s Pure electric Modular Architecture 2+ (PMA2+) platform, the smart #5 is 4,705 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,705 mm tall, and spans a wheelbase of 2,900 mm. The ground clearance varies from 156 mm to 231 mm depending on the variant picked. The boot space is 630 litres, which is expandable up to 1,530 litres.

Designed by Mercedes-Benz, the smart #5 is a rugged SUV, featuring a new “Sensual and Sharp” styling concept. It boasts a squared-off silhouette with classic design elements. The front fascia comprises a full-width light bar, four oval lights, and smart badging. Other key exterior highlights include - short overhangs,dual-coloured mirrors, floating wheel caps, frameless doors, and a panoramic sunroof.

The Jungle Realm edition exclusively features an X-shaped painted roof platform, a luggage rack, side steps, and a side ladder.

The interior is loaded with a bucketload of advanced technology features, making it a highly connected and user-friendly space for drivers as well as passengers. It uses generative AI tech for the voice-command system that controls everything from navigation to phone calls to music and much more.

smart #5 drivetrain and range

The long-range trims of the EV are equipped with a rear-wheel drive motor that makes 335 PS of maximum power and 373 Nm of peak torque. The motor is fed by a 76-kWh LFP battery pack, offering a range of 570 km (on the CLTC cycle).

The Ultra-long Range version, on the other hand, is powered by a more powerful RWD e-motor tuned to deliver 358 PS and 373 Nm. It is paired with a 100-kWh ternary lithium battery that lets the EV cruise up to 740 km.

Powering the top-spec Jungle Realm Limited Edition is a dual-motor setup generating a combined output of 579 PS. With a 100-kWh ternary lithium battery pack, it achieves a maximum CLTC range of up to 580 km.

The RWD models are equipped with Eco, Comfort, and Sport modes, whereas the AWD variant comes with an extra all-terrain mode for sand, snow, rock, and mud.

The safety kit comprises a total of 8 airbags and smart’s Pilot Assist 3.0 advanced driver assistance pack, powered by two Nvidia Drive OrinX chips. The latter consists of 23 safety features, including cruise control, traffic jam assist, blind-spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking, and lane change assist.

Will the smart #5 come to Malaysia?

While no official confirmation is yet available, the strong demand for smart EVs in Malaysia suggests that smart #5 could join the local lineup soon.
