Second-gen Volkswagen ID.3 EV in the works; debut next year
KUALA LUMPUR: Volkswagen introduced a dedicated range of EV models, the Intelligent Design (ID), back in 2019, and the first model launched under the ID umbrella was the ID.3. Fast forward to today, the German automaker is set to give the compact electric hatchback a generation upgrade. It has released the first official design sketches of the new ID.3.

The bookings of the second-gen Volkswagen ID.3 are already underway in Germany at a starting price of €43,995 (approximately equal to RM 203,155).The rendered pictures revealed some minor exterior changes of the upcoming model, including restyled bumpers and new lighting units, offering it a more aggressive look. The interior, on the other hand, appears significantly upgraded over the outgoing version. It will be equipped with a bigger 12-inch infotainment unit along with the latest software generation enabling system and OTA software update capability.
The EV will also feature better quality materials and a redesigned central console accommodating a set of cup holders. A removable compartment floor will also be a part of the EV’s equipment kit.
“The new ID.3 demonstrates our commitment to quality, design, and sustainability. The design has matured, and we’ve upgraded the materials used in the interior'', says Imelda Labbé, Volkswagen Board Member for Sales, Marketing, and After Sales. In coming up with the revamped version, the development team took on board a range of suggestions from customers in order to improve the product and enhance the standard equipment package: “The needs of our customers are always front and center for us. That’s why we listen carefully and focus on gearing our product portfolio to their requirements'', Labbé added.
Furthermore, the automaker confirms the second-gen Volkswagen ID.3 will support advanced functions like the Plug & Charge and the intelligent Electric Vehicle Route Planner making the charging experience more convenient and straightforward. As for driving assistance tech, advanced systems such as Travel Assist with Swarm Data and the Park Assist Plus with Memory Function will come into play.
“Part of our mission at Volkswagen is to offer state-of-the-art technologies and innovations across all models, including compact vehicles, and the ID.3 exemplifies this – for example when it comes to new convenience and assist systems: we are taking the next step forward on the way to highly automated driving with the use of swarm data in the latest Travel Assist”, explains Kai Grünitz, Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management responsible for Development.
The bookings of the second-gen ID.3 in pre-configured Life, Business, Style, Max, and Tour trims are already underway in Germany. The price begins from €43,995 (approximately equal to RM 203,155).
