Say hello to Volkswagen’s new all-electric estate car, the ID.7 Tourer

KUALA LUMPUR: Even though SUVs have become popular and led to the disappearance of several body styles including station wagons, Volkswagen made a bold move by unveiling the all-electric wagon version of the ID.7 sedan. Dubbed as the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer, the EV is one of the first electric estate cars in the European market.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What distinguishes the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer from the ID.7 sedan?

The ID.7 Tourer sets itself apart with a longer roofline, sleek boot lid transition, and increased rear height, offering a larger luggage compartment than the sedan.
  • What is the range of the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer?

The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer is expected to offer a WLTP-claimed range of up to 685 km.
  • Upon introducing the ID.7 Tourer, Imelda Labbé, Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management, responsible for Sales, Marketing, and Aftersales, said, “The new ID.7 Tourer is a perfect estate model, especially for families and long-distance drivers. With plenty of space and a high level of comfort, it impresses fully electrically with long ranges!" The ID.7 Tourer will be produced together with the ID.7 fastback saloon and the ID.4 SUV at the electric mobility plant in Emden, Germany.

Compared to the ID.7 sedan, the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer comes with some visual differences, particularly at the rear. The estate model has a longer roofline and a sleek transition to the boot lid, making it look unique. In terms of style, the Tourer is a fusion of a classic estate such as the Passat and a dynamic shooting brake such as the Arteon

The new body style also comes with increased height at the rear, making the luggage compartment larger than that of the fastback saloon. With five people on board, the ID.7 Tourer has a luggage capacity of up to 605 litres, expandable up to 1,714 litres.

With the latest-gen electric drive system, the Volkswagen touring car will be offered in two different battery sizes, expected to offer a WLTP-claimed range of up to 685 km. The larger battery pack is engineered to support charging speeds of up to 200 kW at DC fast-charging stations. At this rate, the battery will juice up from 10 to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes.

The ID.7 Tourer also features innovative technology aimed at enhancing both safety and comfort. It is equipped with an augmented-reality (AR) head-up display as standard, which projects essential journey information directly into the driver's field of vision. Also part of the kit is a panoramic sunroof with smart glass technology that offers flexibility, allowing passengers to adjust transparency.

Further adding to the comfort is the Wellness In-Car App offering premium-class comfort through automated vents, ergoActive seats with a pressure-point massage function, and automatic air conditioning. The Wellness In-Car app introduces three preconfigured programs (Fresh Up, Calm Down, and Power Break), enhancing wellbeing during travel or rest stops. It also controls background lighting, sound, air conditioning, smart glass, seat air conditioning, seat massage, ID.LIGHT, and infotainment screen.

The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer will hit the European showrooms later this year.
