KUALA LUMPUR: After a long teaser campaign, Mazda has finally pulled the wraps off its new three-row SUV, the CX-90. It is the brand’s new flagship model basically designed for the US market and also a part of the company’s Large Product lineup. The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is offered in two electrified powertrains - a 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv G mill mated to a 48-volt mild hybrid system and a 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G NA paired with an e-motor, and a 17.8-kWh battery.The CX-90 is built on a new large platform that has a front-engine, rear-wheel-bias longitudinal layout taking the brand’s signature driving performance to the next level. Part of the new underpinnings is the Kinematic Posture Control system borrowed from the MX-5 Miata. The said system can suppress body lift on tight corners while enhancing the grip and thus helps the occupants in maintaining a natural posture.
The seats and suspension are designed in a way to “offer better balance, control, and confidence in a range of driving situations.”
The US-spec Mazda CX-90 is offered in two electrified drivetrains; the first is a 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv G turbocharged six-cylinder gasoline mill mated to a 48-volt mild hybrid system churning out a maximum power output of 345 PS and a peak torque of 500 Nm.
Another option is a plug-in hybrid one consisting of a 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G naturally-aspirated four-popper engine, an e-motor, and a 17.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The total system output is rated at 327 PS and 500 Nm.
As for the transmission, Mazda ditches the old-school torque converter in favour of a new eight-speed automatic transmission. Also part of the kit is an i-Activ all-wheel drive and Mazda Intelligent Drive Select system with four driving modes - Normal, Sport, Off-road, and Towing.
