Say hello to BYD’s new hatchback EV concept, the Ocean-M
KUALA LUMPUR: BYD has pulled the wraps off an all-new Ocean-M electric hatchback concept at the Auto China 2024. The new hatchback is positioned between the Dolphin and the Seal, expanding options for customers interested in smaller EVs.

The BYD Ocean-M concept is said to be based on a new platform (possibly e-platform 4.0) compared to the Dolphin and Seal models, which use e-Platform 3.0.The concept is said to be based on BYD’s new platform, possibly e-platform 4.0, setting it apart from the Dolphin and Seal models that utilise e-Platform 3.0.
The new BYD EV will also come equipped with the latest Blade 2 battery technology. Announced earlier this year, the second generation version of the blade battery will be smaller and lighter yet deliver the same endurance. Additionally, the updated battery technology is expected to lower power consumption per 100 kilometres and enable all-electric models to achieve a range of over 1,000 kilometres under CLTC testing conditions.
In terms of design, the BYD Ocean M concept commands attention with its head-turning orange paintwork complemented by slim headlamps integrated with LED daytime running lights and an aggressive aero package. It features a massive front splitter, aggressive side skirts, and an imposing rear wing inspired by GT3 racing cars. Adding to its sporty demeanour is a distinctive all-black roof and pillars, flush-type door handles, and dark-finish alloy wheels.
Details about the interior are currently under wraps. However, expectations are high for a well-appointed cabin with several modern amenities like a digital instrument panel, a larger touchscreen infotainment system offering intuitive controls and connectivity options and a high-end sound system.
As for safety, the BYD Ocean M EV is expected to get advanced driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and possibly even advanced collision avoidance technologies.
The road-ready version of the BYD Ocean-M is set to launch in the third quarter of 2024 at an estimated price range of CNY 150,000 - CNY 200,000 (approx RM 98,800 - RM 131,700).
