Revealed: 2016 Porsche 718 Boxter Engine Specification
Kuala Lumpur: The 2016 Porsche 718 Boxter will be available in two versions of flat-four turbocharged petrol engines, says an Autocar report. The UK-based auto portal, who got an opportunity to test the upcoming Boxter facelift also reveals that the both variants of the 2016 Porsche 718 Boxter are developed from the new turbocharged flat-six engine (9A2B6T), which was made for the 991-generation 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S facelift models. Earlier in December, the upcoming Boxster was rebadged with a '718' Suffix. The new flat-four turbocharged petrol engine (9A2B4T) of the upcoming Porsche 718 Boxter has actually dropped two cylinders from the engine and is oriented to match the turbo unit. The Boxter model which was tested by the Autocar is a base 2.0-litre unit that is upgraded by a single turbo to deliver the maximum power of 295 hp along with a peak torque of 350 Nm. However, its bore (91mm) and stroke dimensions ( 76.4 mm) remains unchanged from that offered in 911.
The German automaker will offer a higher-spec Boxster S model, whose engine is said to feature a larger bore and stroke to upgrade the engine capacity to around 2.4-2.5-litres. The engine of the higher-spec Boxter S Model is also expected to feature Porsche’s Variable Turbine Geometry turbo tech from the 911 Turbo, with the power and torque figures estimated at 355 hp and 400 Nm.
In terms of performance, the upcoming Porsche 718 Boxter is said to accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in just 5.5 seconds before hitting the top-speed of over 280 kmph. The higher-spec Boxter S could make the same century sprint much quicker in 5.0 seconds.
Matthias Hofstetter, Powertrain Development Head for the Boxster and Cayman, has said that the new flat-four turbocharged of the upcoming Porsche 718 Boxter will be also equipped with a water-cooled intercooler in order to bring the air temperature from 160 degrees Celcius to 50 degrees Celsius. The said engine will get four active engine mounts and will be paired to either a 7-speed PDK dual clutch auto or 6-speed manual transmission. The existing Boxter model is powered by a 2.7-litre naturally aspirated flat-six cylinder engine which delivers a maximum power of 265 hp and peak torque of 280 Nm. Whereas, the higher-spec Boxter model features a 315hp/ 360 Nm naturally-aspirated flat-six cylinder unit. Obviously, the upcoming Porsche 718 Boxter model will be more powerful than the existing models but it will also come with an addition weight of 85 kilograms because of its turbo bits.
Exterior wise, the 2016 Porsche 718 Boxster will flaunt some minor changes including the newly designed wings, side panel air intakes and the rear spoiler. Inside, the upcoming Porsche 718 Boxter model could feature better feel and finish with an optional 918 Spyder-style steering wheel in addition to a Sports Response button. The price and other specs of 2016 Porsche 718 Boxter are expected to be announced officially at the end of the January.
