Proton X90 revealed as the brand’s first mild-hybrid EV
KUALA LUMPUR: Proton’s highly-anticipated three-row SUV is finally in front of us and as expected it is called the X90. This is the brand’s third X-series model that slots above the X70 in the lineup. Most importantly it marks the automaker’s entry into the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market, which means the upcoming Proton X90 is a mild-hybrid electric vehicle.

- The X90 will be offered in four variants - Standard, Executive, Premium, and Flagship
- Two seating configurations will be available. Including 7-seater and 6-seater (with captain chairs in the second row)
- With safety at the top priority, the SUV will come loaded with several Proton-first intelligent safety features, including Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Collision Warning, Traffic Sign Information
- The infotainment needs of the passengers will be taken care of by a 12.3-inch touchscreen display (brand’s largest and most advanced unit till date) powered by an EO2 processor
- An easy-to-read and intuitive digital user interface incorporating a 10-inch LCD meter combination will also be there
- As mentioned above, the upcoming Proton X90 is a mild-hybrid vehicle; it combines 1.5-litre TGDi engine with an innovative 48V Electric Motor Synergy (EMS) System delivering a combined output of 190 PS and 300 Nm
- The power is sent to the wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission
Proton further explained the innovative 48V Electric Motor Synergy (EMS) System, which comprises six key components - 48V Belt-Starter Generator motor, DC Converter, 48V Lithium-Ion Battery, Battery Management System, Recuperation Braking System, and Hybrid Module Control System. It not only enhances fuel efficiency but also reduces emissions while delivering additional power (13 PS) and torque (45 Nm) for improved performance.
Based on the Geely Haoyue, Proton's new three-row model boasts a premium design with muscular silhouette highlights. On the front lies a restyled Infinite weave grille housing diamond shapes inspired by songket pattern and unique headlamp design with L-shaped DRLs.
Upon unveiling the new SUV, Dr Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer of PROTON said “PROTON is proud to continue playing a leading role in the development of the local automotive industry. With our commitment to "Intelligence That Empowers," we are introducing the PROTON X90 as our first mid-hybrid model, showcasing innovative technologies and intelligent solutions that empower our customers. The 48V EMS System delivers improved fuel efficiency, performance, and reduced emissions, and represents our first step into the New Energy Vehicle segment.”
Proton confirmed the X90 will be assembled at its Tanjung Malim plant alongside the X50 and X70. While it remained tight-lipped on the matter of price and launch date, it announced that ordering books for the SUV will be opened soon.
The preview sessions of the latest Proton model across six cities will commence on 8 April 2023.
