Proton X50 becomes Malaysia’s favourite compact SUV once again

KUALA LUMPUR: The automotive arena in Malaysia has always been competitive, with numerous automakers vying for the top position. Among various models, the Proton X50 has particularly captured the hearts of Malaysians since its initial launch in October 2020, quickly rising to the top of the B-segment SUV category.

However, Proton's beloved SUV faced some scepticism from certain quarters, but when Proton launched an upgraded version in June this year, the X50 quickly regained its leadership in the segment.

In the last month, the automaker sold a total of 2,585 units of the SUV, making July the best-performing month of this year. The recent rebound solidifies the X50's status as Malaysia’s favourite compact SUV.  

Since its launch at the pandemic's peak, the Proton X50 has achieved nearly 120,000 sales. This milestone makes it the fastest-selling SUV in Malaysian automotive history. Despite fierce competition from newer models introduced by Japanese and Chinese brands, the X50 grabbed an impressive 10.3% market share in the SUV segment from January to June 2024. This success story of the SUV underscores the trust customers place in Proton's offerings. 

If we talk about the 2024 Proton X50 updates, the SUV comes with reduced noise, vibration,  and harshness (NVH) levels, enhancing the driving experience. It benefits from an upgraded  10.3-inch central display, which now comes as standard fitment. The upgraded infotainment unit features new hardware with improved boot-up and loading times, and integrated telematics via the Proton Link app. 

The 2024 Proton X50 also gets an upgraded 360-degree camera system featuring a ‘3D Live Feed’ view to provide better manoeuvring assistance. The Flagship and Premium variants now include a powered tailgate as a standard feature, previously available only as an option.

Proton also shed some light on the SUV’s customer base. It revealed that the X50 appeals to both male and female buyers. It is also popular among young professionals and families, as more than 60% of customers are aged between 26 and 50.
