Proton sold more than 15000 cars in April
KUALA LUMPUR: In February 2021, Proton managed to sell a total of 11,873 units (domestic and export) and touched new market highs which it had not experienced for several years. Just like that, it made a new record in March by selling as many as 14,989 cars, left to touch the 15k mark with just a few units. No worries, the April month added that figure in the Proton sales history. The company kickstarted the second quarter of the year with a bang and sold a total of 15,017 units in the quarter’s first month.
The new records strengthen the company’s second position in the sales chart with market share for 2021 estimated at 24.4%, whereas the overall volume stands at 47,843 units after the first four months of the year.
Let’s talk about the star performers, the evergreen Proton Saga regained its leadership in the A-segment sedan category with 5,472 units. The brand’s SUVs also contributed largely to crack the 15k mark; the X50 set yet another new high for deliveries with 3,583 units delivered in the month while the X70 extended its dominance in the C-segment SUV class with 2,101 units.
The remaining three models - Persona, Exora, and Iriz also performed well with their highest sales figures of this year. The Persona achieved 2,266 units and begged the second spot in its segment. The Exora again ruled the C-segment MPV class while the Iriz sales received a boost from strong demand for the R3 Limited Edition model.
“For PROTON, we are continuing with efforts to meet the strong demand for our products while maintaining a high level of product quality. At the same time, we are focussing on improving customer service and addressing issues related to spare parts availability, which is vital as our sales volume increases. We estimate the situation will see significant improvement as the year progresses but we are working hard to move up that timeline,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar.
Besides hitting the high sales numbers, April also marked the ground breaking ceremony for the brand’s new stamping plant at its Tanjung Malim factory. With an investment of RM 200 million, the facility is expected to start operations by the third quarter of next year.
