Proton sales report 2022: 141,432 units sold with 3 models as segment leaders

KUALA LUMPUR: 2022 was a good year for the Malaysian automotive industry and as a result, the car brands enjoyed good sales numbers. Here, we have the Proton 2022 sales figures revealing that the national automaker ended the year as the fourth consecutive year of sales growth with overall sales hitting the highest mark since 2013. 

Proton sold a total of 141,432 cars (domestic and export) in 2022 with 14,750 registrations in the month of December, which can also be seen as its fourth best monthly performance for the year. With that, the automaker retained its second position in the market with an estimated share of 19.6%. It is to be noted that the Total-Industry-Volume for 2022 is estimated at over 720,000 units.

In comparison to 2021, the company achieved a hike of 23.3%, despite the problems like flash floods and shortage of chips, encountered during the year. The brand’s performance in the international market is only getting better with a year-on-year growth of 79.1%, making it the industry’s leading exporter. 

Here’s a breakdown of Proton 2022 sales -

• The Proton X50 continues to be the best-selling SUV in Malaysia with 3,764 units delivered in December, bringing the yearly total down to 40,681 units (41.4% more than in 2021)
• The Proton X70 also kept the brand’s position high in the SUV segment with 1,787 units sold in the last month. The yearly total stood at 18,533 units (13.1% growth over the previous year), making it the best-selling C-segment SUV
• Proton Exora became the brand’s third-segment leading model with 4,275 units sold in 2022, up by 5.9% compared to the previous year

• Coming to Proton’s best-selling car Saga, the sedan found 5,913 new homes in December pushing the total volume to 55,878 units with 31.1% yearly growth
• Proton Persona and Iriz contributed 2,322 and 526 units to the monthly sales with a total of 16,357 and 5,708 units sold during the year

“2022 was a year of achievements and missed opportunities for PROTON. The effect of the floods at the end of 2021 spilled over into the first quarter of the year and ensured we began 2022 on the back foot as we collaborated with our vendors to restore parts supply. Thankfully, the volume was made up over the next three quarters, but we are confident we could have achieved more and posted even better numbers if not for the disrupted start to the year. Still, PROTON now has sales growth for a fourth consecutive year, and we are proud of being the only automotive company in Malaysia to achieve that from 2019 to 2022."

“Looking ahead towards 2023, PROTON is confident of achieving more growth as we add to our range of offerings with our new model launches this year. However, we expect TIV to recede from the record volume in 2022 as deliveries for orders placed during the sales tax exemption period will be fulfilled by the end of March. Interest rates are also expected to increase again this year so it will be tough for the automotive industry to continue an upwards trajectory,” said Roslan Abdullah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, PROTON.
